It depends on what you feel comfortable with. My first time exploring, I went with a friend who also has an interest in urbex. My second time, I went alone. If you decide to go alone, make sure people know where you are and you have a charged phone on you.

By your posts, I notice you seem worried, so it might be best for you to go with a friend (at least the first time). Honestly, most of the time it's nothing to worry about.

ill probably go with a friend depending on if i go to the location but i found out the location i found wasn't so remote its on a hiking trail and marked on the map of said hiking trail so if i go to a more open location ill probably go alone i do hoe other locations marked down that are more interesting, farther away, but not so remote so i could be seen

Generally helpful to have a friend (or another hobbyist) with you especially if you're green. You didn't mention where you're from, but in case with homeless it's likely safer with more people. If you happen to fall, a buddy can be a lifesaver.

Didn't mention where im from because not looking for someone online to meetup with (just as I don't have a car and it would be awkward) and yeah a friend would probably be a lot of help in a fall

I find two people to be the magic number. One partner is enough to get help if something goes wrong and to share the experience with, while still few enough to not slow you down or draw more attention, and allow you to enjoy the isolation.

There is no "if I fall". You fall you die.
Burn that into your skull.
Falls must be avoided; this is your responsibility alone.
Every step and handhold count.
Once in free fall you have very little control.
Since you didn't plan the jump, you land on -whatever- is below you.
Most fatal falls off ladders* are between 6-10 feet.
On shorter falls you have less time to position yourself and judge what to do even if you react quickly, correctly and can see where/what you are headed into.
Most sploring falls are blind drops into oblivion to shortly meet your fate.

For mine exploring, my magic number is three. If something goes bad, one person can go for help while the other stays with the injured explorer.

Although I have, and still do explore alone, I am even more cautious. Cell phones are useless underground so it could be a long time before someone realizes I am overdue, where the mine is located, and where I am within the mine.

If it's in the middle of nowhere, low risk, etc, I'd say it might be worth it to go by yourself if you don't have anybody coming to mind that you really want to go with. I know people get different things out of exploring, and I enjoy going with people sometimes, but the isolation of exploring alone is something I can't really match elsewhere in my life. It's fucking great.

Might not be your thing, or you might give it a try by yourself and love it. I know people that just never go alone, and I always wonder if they're kinda dependent on the idea of having company, and missing out on some of my favorite aspects of exploring.

I never go solo if it’s a first trip, but picking a smart partner can be really hard. Usually I go for the most mature adventurous friend I know because they’re down to explore but not stupid enough to get us into a mess. Bigger locations are something I won’t do alone either unless I’m really comfortable with the place because I’ve come across animals nesting and angry raccoons suck to deal with when you’ve got two people, let alone solo. Honestly partnering is probably your best bet until you’re super comfortable with what you’re doing and you’ve got a few rules and tips in your brain. It’s really just up to experience. I don’t recommend taking groups of more than three though, that’s when people get careless or separated and that’s a whole other issue to deal with. Don’t get separated. It sucks and you can’t like, yell to find them, so have a meet up spot if one of you goes missing for like 15 minutes or something. Be safe!

Im supposed to refrain from posting here but the main thing about this question is don't you have more fun when exploring with a friend. That makes all the difference I don't take a friend along to assist me or save my butt in an emergency although having another pair of eyes and ears certainly is a plus.

I take a friend along to share and enjoy the thrill and experience. Your mileage may vary but two is just right for me.

One is the loneliest number. (about 90% of my exploration has been alone )

I enjoy the solitude and the chill time... quiet time is a good thing.

I do too, agree 100% but I look back fondly now on all the exploring I did with some friends, good times man. Always something funny happened and some tight scrapes too but such great stories to retell.

Someday maybe all the old DEA folks can get together over a cold one or two.

I miss them a lot.

I go alone about 90% of the time due to most of my friends either being scared or disinterested. The other 10% of the time is basically me serving as a tour guide of some place i have already explored 99 times. I don't generally bring people to more risky spots unless I know they can handle it. And I only know like 1 person who can handle those locations. Even he is busy all the time.

Some places give me the creeps. I usually go through them anyway and take some shots but these places give me that vibe to constantly peak over my shoulder. And I'd much rather have some backup.

1 advantage of being alone however is that on spotting a security guard or some sort of other danger I can immediately let my adrenaline take over and go into evasive maneuvers. Recently I had to do such a thing. I bounced out of that building and off the side of the roof very fast.... Stealth ran across a dark alley, popped onto my stashed bicycle and blasted up outta that bitch so fast... Part of me is a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

If your uncle Jack were stuck on a roof. And he asked for your help. Would you help your uncle Jack off?

Go alone. People will just get in the way and get you caught.

i usually go with one or two friends! there's safety in numbers but having too many people can attract unwanted attention or become problematic when a conflict of interest arises and you end up having to mediate the group. i've never gone exploring alone, though. it's just too dangerous for me personally.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I ran solo for my first three years or so before I started meeting up with other people and now it's 50/50 if I'm exploring with people or alone.

If you're exploring alone, you can take as much time as you want for pictures, you can explore at your own pace, it's easier to be stealthy, and you only really have to worry about yourself. The downside is there is nobody to watch your back, you're on your own if things go south, and two people can achieve things one person can't.

If you're exploring with a friend or two you gotta worry about them, and I personally feel a sense of responsibility for them if I'm the more experienced one. Plus it's harder to be stealthy with more people. On the upside I personally find urbex more fun when the experience is shared, and it's a bit less stressful when you have somebody to watch your back.

Exploring in large groups can be done, but it's almost always done in locations that have been previously run by at least one or more people in the group before. The lack of stealth and tendency of explorers to scatter like a herd of cats in large groups makes exploring in groups unwise in locations where nobody is experienced with that location.

I almost always explore with someone. I have an adventure buddy and we have done lots of exploring over the years. I trust him completely and I have more fun with him.

That being said we are well suited for each other. When he is not available I have explored on my own rather than inviting someone else as I don’t have other friends that would react well in some of the situations I’ve been in.

If I explore with other friends it is usually bringing them to a place I already have been that I want to revisit versus a new place.

I learned my lesson early when exploring a Cave. It was one of the first real places that I choose to explore. I warned people we needed to cross a river, everyone was in. When we got to the river folks with me backed out and insisted we went home. I returned the following week with my now adventure friend but it made me realize that I need to be very careful as you don’t know how folks will react. I think this is even more important as I have move into more urban exploring.
