I don't think that's entirely true. The frequenting part anyways. (If it is, hi FBI! Hi NSA! Hi Trump!)I think a lot of people saw a few videos and stumbled here to learn more, browsed the DB to see if that shopping center down the road is on there and only sparingly returned once they found out it wasn't.

I'm sure that a handful departments and security agencies have a few guys that keep track of an abandonment or two but that's about it, usually it's those old big power plants and factories (Like Bailey Power Plant in Winston-Salem was, it's undergoing renovations and looks really nice) that people could get seriously hurt or killed in.

As for the scrappers any building with shuttered windows is fair game, including those on here.

Taggers/vandals just paint on anything abandoned or not. Abandoned buildings are a magnet though.

Arsonists... just do arson-y stuff.

Probably totally wrong, but it is possible that there is an inaccuracy there.

You forgot a few federal agencies and also that urban explorers come in all occupations.
Yes, well...

Really you have no idea how visible you are here to some here.
Consider this site completely transparent to them
Anything you transmit by the internet is fair game for live agents, AI filters, and bulk data storage.
Welcome to the wonderful digital age.
At least one former member has served time for what they posted online here; the FBI was involved.

I know first hand from an employed friend that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation frequents forums like these (not this one exclusively) and has a full time staffer that scours for information. It aids them in arson, drug manufacturing, wrongful death, and many other investigations.

So you can not think that is true all you want. Me personally I'm going to listen to the guys that have been doing this a lot longer than I and be careful about what gets posted online.

Its pretty frustrating tho. Im an urban photographer, and I love urbexing. I was hoping this was a place to share info, but whenever I come on here for help with locations I get shut down so I go elsewhere. Then when I come back I get dinged for not being on here.

It depends on the info. Publicly sharing location names, addresses, and entry points is highly discouraged around here, and least for basic members. Once you earn your full membership, you'll have full access to the UER Database, where it's acceptable to post real names and addresses for location entries, though entry points is still discouraged.

Smaller city specific forums tend to be a lot more laid back about that, but that's because everyone on them probably knows each other in person, and you can't even access the basic areas without being vetted first. UER is a bit more public, and thus a bit more strict about posting location info out of sheer necessity.

Essentially, keep it to the private areas of the forum because the public areas are open to anyone with an internet connection. Doors open once you get your full membership.

This is a trust-based community. We don't share information with outsiders, but meet the threshold of trust (which may mean different things from Full Membership), and information flows freely. This is for the protection of sites as well as urban explorers.

It's really not that hard to become a full member.

Read the rules:
http://www.uer.ca/...1&fid=1&currpage=1

Read the FAQ:
https://www.uer.ca...d=1&threadid=27619

Check out the Rookie Forum:
https://www.uer.ca...p?fid=1&catid=1089

Stay active on the boards, share some pics of your explores (As an urban photographer, you must have tons), and you will be an FM in no time. This community really isn't asking very much of anyone to become a full member.

Stay safe, and best of luck on your FM journey....

Spot on.
Don't shit on the giant's shoulder you're sitting on
Look at all the web crawlers on here at any given time: https://www.uer.ca/online/
You can also see which members like to look around the site and learn.
It's only fair and sound reasoning that you should have to earn your FM here.
It's not hard and there are many different pathways to achieve it.
Even a dead member got their FM; we take care of our own.

Personally I loathe tourists...

Well stated.
Many use PMs and much of the com here is via PM rather than viewable threads/posts.
All members can use PMs... if they choose to.

So very true!! For years I posted on a mine exploring forum. As is my custom, I occasionally go off and write a long diatribe about whatever topic that has my feathers ruffled. About a year ago one of the members found a white paper named "Taking on the White Hats" written by an agency that closes mines. The author included two long quotes taken directly from our discussion forum. Turns out that I wrote both of those posts that were included in the paper. Guess I was the head troublemaker over there.

So yes, various agencies spend time scanning online forums related to their area of responsibility. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.

Wow, that is a good thing you did, Blackhawk. Unfortunately, the article explaining his passing is now a broken link, but I think I get the gist.

He obviously had an impact here on this forum. It's been over ten years and he is still being talked about. That says a lot about him.

What's the best way to approach finding people to explore with? I posted something and got a pretty negative response. My boyfriend and I are both into urban exploring(him a little more than me because I'm disabled and have some limitations)

I'm also looking for info on maybe some urban legends and weird things about our area and state. We have explored a few places in town, one being an old factory that we didn't take pictures of as the building owners are not friendly and I worry about possible backlash.

The backlash was because you started off simply asking for handouts, which doesn't really fly here. If you want to find locations, odds are you gotta find them yourself- finding them often takes hours of digging through Google results, searching city records, trawling Google Maps, and just wandering around, and most people aren't going to give the end result of that effort to the first stranger who asks.

Now, if you want to meet other people, the best way to do that is to find a few locations near you to start. Then establish yourself on the forums by becoming an active and known poster, who regularly contributes to discussions. Once you're a little less of a stranger to everyone, find a UER member geographically close to you and PM them. Don't ask for locations, ask if they'd be interested in meeting up, and if they say yes explore one of your previously discovered locations with them. If it goes well, you can take it from there and invite them on subsequent explorations, and they might do the same.

Sorry people felt I was asking for handouts. My boyfriend tends to scout locations first to see if they are accessible enough for me and I was hoping to talk to some people who maybe explore locally about how accessible certain locations are. Being disabled as def made urban exploration hard for me. Was hoping to maybe talk to some local peps about easier accessible locations, maybe outdoor locations/urban legends and that stuff. I get that people don't know me and don't want to really talk to me or trust me. Hope I can build some trust with yall.

For the wuv of god -don't- ask for handouts on a thread.
Yet another one appeared today, jeeeesze
These threads will not end well most times here.
At this point it's written in stone with the blood and bones of tourists splattered across countless give me a freebie threads.

Don't beg! Learn how to do it yourself.
Failures, coming back empty handed are part of exploring and the learning curve.
At least have the class to PM a poster about a site rather than post a public viewable help me find it thread!
Posting this kind of thread degrades you.
You are cheating and making yourself look inept.
You should be sharing not begging here.
If a 6 yo kid can find sites, so can you!
There are countless tips on this site to bring you up to speed so you can do it yourself if you try.

Do yourself proud.
Find it yourself, scout it out, splore it.
This especially applies to unproven newbies here.
Be an explorer, not a bloody tourist.
