That is the method I used to find places in my former small town too. It was a rural area with lots of farm houses. Even there I once had a close encounter with the police. So if in a larger town you do manage to find lots of stuff on the industrial side of town how do you avoid getting caught?

In my experience it can actually be a bit easier in more populous areas. In small towns, the cops don't really have anything better to do. In larger cities, the cops usually have bigger issues to worry about.
Furthermore, larger locations tend to be both better secured and easier to get into. By this I mean that you're much more likely to see alarms or cameras around larger locations, but it's harder to physically secure those locations. Its easy to nail some boards over the windows of an abandoned shopfront and seal it completely. It's much harder to render hundreds of yards of perimeter fence and dozens of doors and windows completely impassable to a determined explorer.
Lastly, it's easier to blend into the crowd in larger cities. Stealth tends to take on a different aspect. In rural areas, stealth can often mean "not being seen at all," while in urban areas stealth often means "look like you belong" and hiding in plain sight. Not always, but usually you can find a few moments where nobody's looking at you to access a PoE, and even if they are your average citizen doesn't care enough to do anything if you look like you're supposed to be there.
