Couple Questions For a Newbie

I've just started posting here, and I know it'll be a while before I'm a full member, which is absolutely fine. It's what is necessary to maintain a great, safe community for all of us.

Anyways, there are a couple things I've been wondering that I didn't notice in the FAQ

Firstly, I've noticed that in a lot of "official" urbex videos I've seen, the name and/or location of sites are never revealed. Is this a universally understood policy to avoid sites getting bogged with tourists, scrappers, taggers, and the like, or just some nice coincidences?

Secondly, 've done a bit of exploring myself already, and have a good stock of photos. Until I become worthy of wearing the title of a full fledged member, I can't post a good amount of the pictures I have to their appropriate site pages (if they exist yet), so should I make a forum post for doing so, or just wait until later to post them? (I have others I can and will be posting once I have a proper amount of sleep in me)

Thirdly, what is the policy on lockpicking and the like for gaining access? I'm certainly not saying I have the tools or know-how to do so, but if I somehow did have the ability, would it be something frowned upon by the community, or just another way to gain access?

(also dang c++ code in a text box, I wonder how much I can do here~)

[EDIT]

Forgot one last thing: what do people usually do for video sharing of locations here, or are photos the bigger interest for the community?

time to sleep.

Scrappers and taggers ruin sites, so the majority of explorers, or at least the ones involved with exploring communities in some way, will make up a name for the locations shown. This is considered good practice.

The regional boards are available to everyone, so I don't think there's any reason to wait. In fact, posting pictures of your explores is a good step towards gaining full membership. You don't even have to post in the regional boards - you could always just make a thread in the Photography section.

You'll get different answers from different people. I personally wouldn't, because being caught picking locks or with lockpicks on your person is a huge amount of added risk. From an ethical standpoint, some would say it's fine as long as you put everything back the way it was on your way out.

There's a subforum where you can post videos, or you can include them with a photography set. You'll always attract more interest with photos, since they're just easier to look at and digest. There's definitely an audience for videos though, and it does no harm to post them. Just try not to show entry details, even if you use a false name.

Cool, I figured as much, gotta keep the sites preserved and safe for explorers~

True! I'll probably get to doing that in the next couple days then

Honestly that would be the major concern, because I'm not interested in using that kinda stuff for any devious purposes anyways. Makes sense~

Yeah I've started to notice people just embedding videos from youtube into their threads, don't know why I didn't consider it

Thanks for the info! <3

People interested in enough in legit urbex and not tagging or vandalizing can usually figure out where a location is with enough Google-fu.

Also I'd advise against lockpicking... trespassing is one thing, but breaking and entering charges are an entirely different one. Just look for an unlocked door.

Or a way over the door haha~
Fair point as well. I'm sure there'd generally be a way to get around things in most cases anyways

The primary place to share your pictures is in the forums, not the location database. It's a common mistake a lot of new members make and it can really hold you back.

Also, if you want an extra 'd' in your username, feel free to post a name change request in the Contact a Moderator forum.

Welcome aboard!

My .02 - Lockpicking tools, even unused, can make the whole situation worse.

Also, I wouldn't put much emphasis on becoming a full member. I've had some great interactions with members, read some amazing stories, and looked at hundreds of legit pictures on UER. All without full membership. When it happens, great. But until then UER is still an amazing resource filled with awesome people.

It looks like your questions have already been answered, but I wanted to make one suggestion in regards to sharing photos. Your photo posts will look better, be easier to upload, and have the added advantage (if you care) of providing a link to your other photos if you post the links instead of the actual photos themselves to your posts. Flickr is how I almost always share my photos.
Just be sure to pick the "medium format" and not the large or original, so that they are easily viewable on here and don't hog too much data for those of us with limited data. You should choose the "BB code" option under the share/arrow for your photo if you use Flickr. You'll have to check on how the other sites do it, since I'm pretty much only using the Flickr site for this feature. Good luck.

I love lock picking, but I don't suggest mixing this hobby with that one for obvious reasons. I definitely suggest looking up the laws for picking in your state/country though! They vary widely, even each of the states here in the U.S. Just getting caught with picks in Tennessee is much different than getting caught with them in Arkansas, for example.

Here is an excellent resource for lock picking:

Thanks for the resources and insight! I've actually started using imgur (since I already have an account that I use) to upload pictures and embed them, it's certainly much nicer than directly uploading indeed~
