Exploring During Asbestos Removal

A building I recently discovered seems to be undergoing asbestos removal. It seems they are using ventilation systems and plastic sheets to seal off rooms that are undergoing removal. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with asbestos removal operations and can provide safety tips on working around their operation to minimize my risk of exposure.

Hey there I oversee asbestos abatement at my building and I recommend a mask. Although you're not the one removing the items the dust can still be around. It sounds like it's tented and in full removal mode so you're probably fine when you're outside of the tents (we continue operations around the tents) but if you decide to enter the tents you might want the mask. As a side note, I certainly entered the tents without a mask and anticipate horrid health issues when I'm old as a result; but you should do as I say not as I do and wear your mask!

Avoid it.
You see how they suit up and unsuit/decontaminate?
Even then they can easily end up eating some.

Everything's been stripped out anyway except maybe their equipment.
Wait till it's done and shoot it then.
Before or after but not during!

The building is actually still got a large amount of stuff in it. They seem to be doing everything room by room for the most part. They even have one room with a couch and desk that seems to be their break room.

Yup even with a proper full face respirator and sealed tyvek suit, you'll still end up inhaling some at one point or another. Going in without the proper gear is making it worse as your clothes and skin will carry the fibers with you.

If it's settled like in an old building, it's one thing. Still not exactly 'safe' but it's safer...ish with protection and a good decon plan.

In an active area where it is likely very airborne? Fuck that noise.

Everyone here is right. Asbestos is most dangerous when it's being stirred up by abatement.

Abatement disturbs all the asbestos fibers so that they can be removed. Without proper training and equipment your gonna end up with a lungfull. I would keep and eye on the place. Once they take down the white sheets sealing the building you may have a short window to get inside.

When the tents are up, it's rather a bad idea to go in there if you don't want to be breathing in the stuff--asbestos removal is pretty much the only time you'd really have to worry about it harming you. You probably shouldn't go in there without proper gear.

Full disclosure though, I have gone into those spaces without the proper equipment, but that's a problem for future me.

Probably not. You have to eat a -lot- of it and even then depending on the type and the individual nothing may ever happen.
Never intentionally expose yourself but you had low level exposures... don't sweat it.
Most of the population has had some exposure to it.

It's definitely not something I'm worrying myself over. The effects of exposure to asbestos has been blown out of the water with all the fear and paranoia surrounding it, and while I'm not condoning intentionally going into spaces like that without a respirator, I'm not horribly concerned.

Now should I avoid rooms that are tented or the entire building all together?

I think stealthwraith said it best, the building itself should be not horrible in terms of asbestos in the air if you really want to get inside (you're still taking the risk though), but completely avoid the tents.
