Write something and wait expectantly.

| | | This reminds me of a game I played once. I believe it was called Roulette. In other words, like so many other things, how you respond and how they respond really depends on a ton of variables. Things that are pretty static and unchanging (demographics), like your location, are you urban or rural, even what part of the country are you in (or what country are you in). Other issues have to be assessed quickly and are more fluid. Are you around any gang territory, what is the predominate drug used locally, the ages of the people in question, escape routes, are you alone, etc. etc. I've rarely run into other people, but I've never had a bad experience. A couple times I assessed the situation and stuck around, a couple of times I didn't. Just never let your guard down and remember that people - especially those under the influence or aspiring to be under the influence (on your dime) - can be very unpredictable and are probably much more adept at playing the game than you are.

| Fluid is the key word here. It's the game that moves as you play it. I've gotten into sketchy situations and played them right... and didn't get played. Best scenario; hear them, smell them, see them before they do you. Avoid when possible and observe. Meh, one wolf pack can ruin or whole day... people are trouble

I'd be careful carrying that on your hip unless it's under your shirt. If a junkie/cop/owner sees that it could elevate the situation. Best to carry a small bottle or use something else less obvious. A friend of mine got in a pretty sticky situation because he had a knife and pepper spray on his hip clearly visible when he ran into the owner and then later the police
| I never carried pepper spray and I've dealt with some vicious canines at work. It's inhuman to use on canines; they'll rub their eyes in the gravel to try and stop the pain. Humans can understand the pain is harmless and work through it. If you need to carry it, you aren't ready and shouldn't be there. It wouldn't stop some and it may end up disabling you more than them. Then you're really fucked. I've never had to use a weapon while exploring in over half a century. A good walking stick is one of best weapons you can carry in plain sight.
