Cement plant; Washington Cascades (10 pics)

Our road to this site took us up a forested mountainside, past a mirror pond and waterfalls, to a new cyclone fence garnished with barbed wire. Beyond it stretched a manicured lawn. The gate was unlocked; still, this place looked too freaky for us to comfortably pass thru.

We got around it by hiking an abandoned road that was turning into a stream. We squelched across an old quarry; a desolate cement structure came into view thru the autumn foliage.

1.

As we approached, we saw that the place was larger than it looked; most of it was hidden by a steep incline. An overgrown side road led to a loading bay. Above us was the track of an overhead trolley that had once brought out heavy loads to trucks. One source calls this site a limestone plant; another a cement factory. We heard a rhythmic crunching of leaves.

2.

3.

TunnelRunner33 spotted a man with a camera walking toward the main building on a lower road. They waved to each other. He'd come with his son, who gathers images here to incorporate into photoshop compositions. He said the site had been a rock-crushing plant.

A slender tower stood apart from the main structure; we saw no openings in its sides, and never found out what it was for. We peered into a crumbling barn, and an outhouse-sized steel shed at the foot of a power pole. Then we headed inside the main structure.

4.

It was a bit strange; some parts resembled a bunker, and others a first-person-shooter castle that M. C. Escher might have designed. Random flights of steps and ladders set in the walls would keep gamers entertained, and there were lots of holes to fall into. Vines and mossy trees pressed against the building's doors and windows. Several openings had been obstructed by massive steel plates; but no part of the building was inaccessible to a persistent adult. We saw lots of exuberant graffiti, including some interesting murals.

5.

6.

7.

8.

We met more friendly explorers, and entered a long inclined conduit. Once it might have held a chute or conveyor belt; now parts of it were like an art gallery. This led us to the top of a round tower whose purpose we couldn't guess.

9.

10.

Below we saw the roof of an underground structure; other explorers told us they thought it was a warehouse. But we were out of time! We hurried back up the new stream to the car. We'll be back!

Great photos. But, what, no shots of the amazing lake? The top floor of that building holds one of the best views in all of Washington!

For some reason, I couldn't concentrate up there.

I left my tripod standing on the floor below, and just took my camera to the top. After I climbed back down the ladder, I heaved a big sigh of relief and headed for the stairs. TR kindly made sure my tripod wouldn't become a trophy for the next explorer.

This was the first time I've ever been out exploring and run into other people who were doing the same thing. It was kind of neat chatting with them for a few minutes. The second group we ran into looked more like teenagers, with a possible younger brother tagging along with them. Two of the boys were wearing hunting gear, and although I didn't see any weapons, I wonder if they might have contributed at all to the spent shotgun shells that were littered all over the place. Here are a few of my pics of the location:

1.

2. I've seen this tag, Perck, all over Seattle in the past few months. It was kind of a surprise to see it here, on a dammed lake in the mountains a few hours drive from the city:

6. Looking out the window of the long 'conveyor belt' structure:

7. We really liked this mural:

9. Could it be the devil the tower is named for?:

Nice historical photos! This place looks slightly different from the one Ganesha and I explored, but I suppose things change over time and the other sections of our building may have been added on later. bbyman, are your historical photos from our very same location?

Even if not, that's very cool, the likeness is pretty amazing.

The info in that link is actually pretty interesting. Looking at Google Earth you can see absolutely nothing but dense trees in the area...

Great pics. I've been to this location a couple times but only at night. Nice to see some daylight pics. I really like the psych ward near by too. We went on a hot windy Summer night and the atmospere was pretty cool. The wind clanging the roofs and doors slamming shut. Wildlife eyes every where watching, watching, ever watching.

I'm always impressed with your pictures Ganesha, thanks for sharing. That place looks a lot more vibrant after seeing some rain.

Pardon the bump, but this site's still generating topics.

According to this document, "of particular interest is condition 11, which reads a follows: 11. Upon abandondment, termination, revocation, or cancellation of this permit, the permittee shall remove within a reasonable time the all structures and improvements except those owned by the United States, and shall restore the site, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing or in this permit. If the permittee fails to remove all such structures of improvements within a reasonable period, they sall become the property of the United States, but that will not relieve the permittee of liability or for the cost of their removal or restoration of the site."

So since they left the mill, the property belongs to the United States? Aka is public land? And the No Trespassing signs around the crusher have no legal merit?
