Aside from the various locations I was taken for band photographs in my high school "metal band" days, games like Fallout made me really interested in checking out ruins.

Read an old post about the Salton Sea and got more and more interested in going around and taking pictures in abandoned areas.

Then google happened

I got to talking about where cool abandoned houses were in northern WI with my friend. i was like "damnit! I wish there was a website with like, a database of cool places". He was certain there was but couldnt remember what it was called. But its 2016 so I had Google in my pocket. Took 1 search.

How did you get in? I didn't know about that group, so I just sent in a request to join. Is it difficult to get in, or can anyone join?

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

It actually used to be public. It only became private within the last week or so. They'll probably let you in.

I was doing a lot of research on the urbex world. One page specifically reddit lead to another page, leading to another page, and finally to this one. I was immediately intrigued. I tend to lurk and just read all I can. I love all the goodies everyone shares. Wish I had my own stories to tell.

Going to my first spot, then trying to look up the history behind it lead to a public entry on Uer.

I was looking for a specific abandoned building in my area I had heard of and I was desperately googling to see if I could find any info on it and as it turns out it was on the UER Locations database which popped up on google. I had no idea a community like this even existed!

Searched "abandoned [town name near me]" and the DB came up as the first result.

I was searching some generic stuff like "abandoned sites [my town]" while looking for places to do my next photography project, and UER was among the first few results!

Started with a Creative Loafing article on an URBEX group here in my city called SPECTRE. I found that article trying to find a group to join to explore legally. I'm still searching for that and heck -'I might start something like that and get all the permissions and waivers for the group
BUT ...I tried to find this group SPECTRE and go out exploring....instead I found UER!

The rest, as they say, is history😬

Similar to other people: I was searching around on Google for locations in and around Toronto I could hit up. I found this place and the mostly inactive Ontario Abandoned Places.

One day I got a good camera.

I have a few friends on here. They told me to check this out. Wasn't long after I met the right people that they knew I really enjoyed exploring. Earned my first kmz when I proved myself to the community.

I did a Google search to find abandoned sites in Georgia, and that's how I found UER. It was the first link. I had no idea that there was an actual organized community focused on urban exploration. In fact, up until about 2 months ago, I called it "ghost hunting."

I had been exploring a fair number of times with some people, and they mentioned the site to me, among other UE-related websites and resources, when I started getting more involved in this kind of stuff. I had checked it out a few times, but never got around to properly making an account until recently.

I was digging around, looking for a new place to explore when I found the catalogue for my city in this website. That was about a year ago. Only recently had it occurred to me that there was an exploration-driven community. That's when I joined.

I googled a location I found pictures of in a book and it led to this site around '07 maybe late '06. I was thoroughly intimidated by a post about using climbing gear to get into a missle silo and kinda wrote the site off as nothing more than a resource since there's no way I'm using climbing gear anywhere but a climbing gym! I kept using it as a lurker for years and finally broke down and joined last fall after I met a FM on an irl explore and was encouraged to join (wish I remembered their user name!).
