| | | Circa 2009, in the US when the stock markets took a hit, and a lot of people lost their homes, I was still in high school and I started getting curious about these abandoned houses, usually left in disrepair, or it became that way very shortly from squatters, looters, or hooliganism and vandalism. I'd always wait for a broken door, unlatched fence, etc before going in. First one was a 2 story house, the same exact floor plan as my mom's place, old place by my neighborhood's standards, originally built in the 40's, in severe disrepair, and about 3 blocks over. I walked past it on the way to my local pool where we had a membership, and I was always curious about it. I remember at one point, the front door was laying on the hinges on the front lawn. I came back that night to look at it after my mom and siblings had crashed, and I decided to go inside. All I had for light was a shitty cell phone. I walked around in the living room, all the furniture left behind, walls vandalized, and an old CRT TV sat on the kitchen floor with a giant hole through the screen. I walked upstairs, and made it to the door of the master bedroom when i heard the garage door open downstairs. I opened the door to the master bedroom, saw nothing but a shitty mattress and a pile of broken wood bed-frame pieces in the corner of the room. I then went through the adjoining master bathroom, and climbed out the window, while whoever had entered was already heading up the stairs. I laid down on the patio roof, (which was what the window dropped out onto) as quietly as I could until I heard them go back downstairs. When I dropped from the patio cover roof, they saw me, looked at me weird, and then went back to their business(squabbling over who gets what rock[crystal meth]). I left through the side gate to the backyard, realized my bike had been stolen by the meth-heads, probably brought inside, so I noped the fuck out and went home.

| | | I lived overseas as a kid. When in Singapore, my dad came across a fishing junk that was literally sinking when we were on the beach for a vacation. He was able to retrieve the brass compass and compass holder (that was lit at night with a candle). He felt bad about removing something from the boat, but it literally went under with him on it. When we were in Brazil, there was an abandoned sugar plantation by our place. My dad would take me out there, and we'd traipse around the grounds. The first time I ever did anything without my dad present was at our church in the States. They'd built a new sanctuary, and the old church building from 1917 was used for a couple of classrooms, but the majority of it was locked up. I was ten or so, and we were farting around one day, and we were able to access an old elevator shaft and a spiral utility staircase by moving a panel from the drop ceiling and crawling around. On the top floor, we found the old sanctuary. It hadn't been used in 25+ years. Where the pews were had been removed, and it was the ceiling for the "new" classrooms underneath. The pulpit, choir section and baptismal pool (we're Baptist) were all still there. There were hymnals and bulletins for the last service held sitting there. We'd sneak up there regularly, but as often happens, one of my friends fell through the sheetrock and ended up in one of the classrooms. He wasn't hurt, but we got a good asschewing by the pastor out of it. They forever sealed it off as a result. They eventually tore the place down in 1998 to make way for a gym and fitness center, but I was hooked by then.

| | | Well it's a bit hazing exactly which was the first, however this was my first construction site that I can recall. I was 5 yo and it was around 6 or 7PM in the summer, the workers were gone. They were digging out a basement for a house. There was a big yellow Cat dozer with no key needed. I pushed the starter button and let it turn over a few. It did. Decided to call it a day, that was good enough. I always regretted not playing with it a bit more... what could they have done? More importantly, what could I have done?
| Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |
