It was a dark stormy and dreary October 11th night in Southern Oregon. The good year of our lord, 1923. Three deranged brothers - The D'Autremont's, 23 year old twins Roy and Ray and their teenage brother Hugh had a hell of a plan. Straight rob this train stacked with riches in the form of Gold. As the train made it's way up the Siskiyou Pass and slowed to enter Tunnel 13, the brothers hopped on board. The told the conductor Sidney Bates to stop the train at gun point and then attempted to blow the locked door of the mail car with a stick of dynamite. Not knowing the power the blew up the whole mail car and the clerk inside with it. They found no gold. They shot and killed 3 railroad employees staying in the stay house right next to the tracks that heard the commotion. Finally, the blasted the poor conductor right in the head with a shotgun and fled into the woods. There was a nation wide manhunt and they weren't found till several years later when the younger brother was serving in the military in the Philippines.

First Look, this is the old stay house where the railroad workers stayed

Another building for workers

Inside the old stay house... the couple pics

Some weird Nazi love bunny

Falling apart

Easy Escape

The Murder shack... or just some building I haven't the faintest clue what it is

Tunnel 13

Inside Tunnel 13

I saw a light at the end of the tunnel

Dark and creepy. Lives where lost in this tunnel...

I made it out alive...

Creatures... of the night

All the pretty buildings...

The wrong side of the tracks...

Me...

That's the back story so you can see why I'd love to explore this. I set off with my son who's my exploration buddy and this is an easy hike and find. It's really cool sitting up there but you get a sense that somebodies watching you or there with you though nobodies around. The original tunnel burnt down and collapsed but they rebuilt it and now trains are running through twice a day. This just started late last month. So exploring the tunnel can be a bit tricky. I talked to some locals but they didn't know when the trains run. So for now on it's safe to say we won't be playing in the tunnels. The trains are spaced 12 hours apart it's just knowing when they run.

Good first post, I like the inclusion of the historical background. Mountain ghost towns are neat, I like the mix of ruins and nature. Thanks for sharing!

If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire... Tunnelrunner33!

Probably one of the best backstories I have heard thus far. Neat pictures too.

Great first post... with the history & pictures.

While I don't recommend it if you do end up in the tunnel with a train and can't safely get out, lie down flat as close to the wall as possible. Cover your head with your arms, face in the gravel. Done that, not fun. Out ran one once too but if you trip, you're boned. It pisses off the engineer if he sees you; expect cops or RR police.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
