Booby trap...something to look out for while exploring

We were exploring an abandoned business turned into junkyard, it looked pretty laid back. We were in an out of a few buildings with no problems. But this one building seemed more secure, I seen a hole in a window with a piece of metal over it, figured we could open the window; I couldn't get the latch thankfully, so I asked the person with me to help he tried and it jerked him really hard, I looked and he had a metal wire wrapped around his hand. I reached my hand in grabbed the wire and I couldn’t move it. He was so calm, I figured he was only stuck but he told me I had to get in there. I ran to the side door, it was locked, ran to the back, all the windows were in tack, I came back around and that’s when he told me I needed to get in there now (I knew then it was serious). I went to the front (which we knew was already secure) I seen one of the panes of the window was plastic so I started busting it out with my hand, I realized that wasn’t a good idea so I picked something up finished getting it out and dove through the little hole in the window, I climbed over all kinds of stuff and ran to the side of the building where he was and I quickly realized what was going on. There was a cinder block (a double one) attached to the other side of the wire, (I got to him just in time because it was pulling him in) I bear hugged it and lifted it. He was able to finally free his hand.
I can’t believe he was able to hold that up as long as he did and remain as calm as he was.
I let him in and we checked out his wrist, I only had napkins and dermabond, so I poured the dermabond on the gash and it stopped bleeding.
We didn’t see anything of real value in this place.

I have never heard of anyone encountering a booby trap. I'm trying to get the word out enough to help others prevent something like this from happening.

Best post ever.
Double bonus for things like 'I seen' and 'pouring dermabond'. LOL

That's crazy! Thanks for the warning - I've never heard of this happening before, but it's definitely a good thing for us all to watch out for!

your friend got lucky that could have broken his wrist. if you hadn't of been with him to get around the other side and release the weight from the cinder block it would have turned into a bad night for him.

this could be further justification for UER people to carry a knife or multi-tool on them at all times.

I don't recall ever seeing a post like this during my time on UER, so congratulations not only on freeing your friend but on having a rare UE adventure, and thanks for bringing to light a danger beyond a location's structural integrity or getting caught by security or law enforcement.

That's pretty scary, once on an explore my mate tripped a wire attached to a (thankfully blank) shotgun shell which went off, that caused a brown underwear moment but nothing compared to that.

I actually carry a Leatherman-style (multi-tool with pliers that have wire cutters) and hold onto it for this purpose. Just ordered a pocket knife as well for self defence. There's a lot of photos worth taking, but you have to be prepared for that. My opinion on multi-tools and knives? Feel free to carry it so long as it is legal to do so, and if caught show you have no ill will and readily present them if asked, then simply explain. Best way to get out of things is to be honest.

Holy shit! I'm used to seeing signs that say stuff like "Bobby Traps" and chuckle to myself, figuring that if they're aren't smart enough to spell, they probably can't make a booby trap worth a shit either. That's a serious trap, thanks for sharing!

Even though you might get in shit you should inform l.e. about this. Warning us is good, but the person responsible (most likely the property owner) will likely do this again. Wire like that can also cut all the way through if you're alone and can't get help.

That's crazy!

The closest thing I've heard of something like this, I have no idea if it's true or not, is in one of the buildings in my area used to have fish hooks hanging at eye level.

Wow, that's pretty messed up! Glad everyone made it out of there OK. Make sure he watches that gash for signs of infection. Who knows what was on that wire.

I would actually recommend against this, or at the least look into any laws regarding booby traps. Naturally, the laws around this sort of thing probably vary from state to state, but a buddy of mine tends his grandpa's place out in the sticks and was telling me about the laws regarding booby traps around in my area (he constantly has to devise new ways to deter intruders on the property - apparently the last time someone stole the security cameras)

Anyway, basically if a trap can be sprung by an unwitting neighbor or random casual passerby (trip wires, pit traps, etc.), the property owner is liable for injuries sustained. However, if the trap requires a deal of interaction to spring (said friend was talking about rigging false cameras up to an electrified cattle fence), the owner isn't legally liable as it requires an intruder to actively take a series of steps to trigger it. Given that your friend was attempting to unlatch the window, I'd say this falls into the latter category, and all that you'd be doing by reporting the incident would be setting yourself up for possible trespassing/burglary charges.

Your friend is super lucky, that it wasn't worse though. It's a very good thing that cut was all that he sustained.
