Normal 'Video Surveillance' signs aren't enough to keep most of us out, what things have you guys seen that turn you off a place forever?

For me it was when I was exploring an old water treatment plant that smelled very faintly like a pool, but worse at the one POE I found. As I made my way around to the other side of the compound I saw this:

Don't plan on going back there soon

On an unrelated note I found the world's saddest streetlight at the same place:

Cops, or SWAT teams, or bees.

One thing for me is heavy traffic, I'm not the type that likes to attach attention but at the same time just try to plan it out more and also think about that theres so many cars just trying to get somewhere that they don't care enough about some guy walking around with a camera, but still can keep me away from a place if there is too much going on. Also some of the best places to see where I live is in the ghetto with many people just hanging around theses abandoned places or near wasting time, dealing drugs, gang stuff and a white boy with a camera snooping around prob not the best thing lol so I don't go to places like this alone at least.

I second what someone said about homeless folks, and about neighborhoods where lots of people just hang out on the streets. I'm always concerned with someone seeing me enter, calling together some friends, and following me inside. I also don't want to discover a POE, only to give it away to nearby bystanders.

Just recently I found a place on my lunch break that I wanted to check out. I went back after work, and although the POE was accessible, there were three homeless folks sitting right in front of it. I walked around for a bit to see if they would leave, and when I returned, they were sitting there smoking crack. I hung around a little longer, guessing they would leave soon, and was rewarded for my patience.

I was able to get into my objective, spending about an hour inside. Just as I was preparing to leave, I remembered the smoker's circle that had been convened just outside the POE. Fearing that they would see me emerging and then blow up the spot once I left, I attempted to slowly and quietly open the rusty and nearly-stuck metal door. I failed miserably, but was relieved to see that the people had not yet returned.

If they are often squatting in the area, it's possible that the folks I saw are already aware of the spot I had explored, but I doubt anyone's spent much time in there. All of the trash looks to be from the 1980's or earlier; all the soda bottles are glass, and the moldy tennis shoes down there simply scream "OLD!"

I'm planning to make a return trip sometime soon, hopefully the entryway will be empty and it will be easier to get in next time.

I've passed up 2 spots recently because they both have been right at really busy intersections. Since I mainly explore for photographic purposes, waiting til dark doesn't really work for me. Plus sometimes I'm just too lazy to wait around for an opportunity.

Kind of curious if just being cocky be a easy way to deal with places like that, you know just walk up like you own the place, have your camera out and even wear a shirt of some random construction company so people think your just surveying the place. Depending on the city sometimes people might just be too busy to really care about some guy with a camera, but really think it be more about if a cop comes by and asks questions and if you can talk your way out. I haven't really tried that yet but who knows.

I found bullet casings outside a place known for regular police patrols. It made me feel a little uneasy but I still ended up exploring the place.

I've done that for much better locations, I guess these recent two weren't worthy enough for me to consider getting my ass out of bed for.

That's probably the way to go, or just walk by casually and duck in quickly (both spots had open doors facing the busy intersection). One of the locations was on a four way stop with a drive up coffee stand full of cars directly across the street. When I circled the block to get another look I noticed a guy on his porch next door smoking and looking right at me. I just chuckled to myself and added it to the 'to do' list.

Something that will keep me away for at least the time being is other people on the property being extremely obvious about it.

I am personally very safe about how I do things. I avoid areas where I can be seen from the road, limit flashlights at night, park in a non-obvious location, ex. I don't mind meeting other explorers but something I've encountered a few times is people on the property being blatantly obvious about it. For example being extremely loud or obvious entering the property. And the huge one, parking directly in front of the abandoned place or even in the driveway.

Normally when I see this I will either go another day or wait a few hours for these people to leave. I'm not going to get caught by police because other random people decided to park right in the driveway in view of everyone.

High chain link fences, if the only way is going up and over them. I suck at climbing fences.
