| | | Do you mind elaborating?? I would love to hear the story | For sure. I was driving around the country and happened upon an abandoned barn surrounded a bunch of prickly briar bushes. Even the most accessible entrance required tactful navigation around them. After some scrapes, I was inside. I took some photos and exited on the other side of the barn, which required more briar navigation. There was a second barn that, just like the first, looked to be on the verge of collapse at any moment from wood rot. I entered after picking my way through more briars and hopping a decrepit wooden fence which was poorly reinforced by a mixture of barbed wire and chicken wire. So I'm in the second barn and I start taking pictures and began to really look at my surroundings. A pair of Hulk-smash hands, copy of psychology today from 2013, and some tacky, new-ish looking lawn ornaments lead me to think 'hey, maybe this isn't abandoned, after all'. The dogs that were on the side of the barn opposite the one I had entered were confirmation of this. There were two at the time, an Australian Shepard and some other white one. I heard the owner call one of their names (I think it was Taffy, or something of that sort). I'm thinking no big deal, I was sure if the dogs or owner spotted me that I could have explained myself. So I continue to take my pictures (here they are.. http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=118067). As I continued to walk around, I stepped on a wood plank that shifted under my weight. The noise caused the dogs to come over to edge of the barn (without going inside) and bark and such. So then I walk outside with the intent of saying hi to and calming them down. Then explaining myself to the owner. I walked over to the dogs, and after a few minutes of dog sweet talk, the Australian Cattle dog has stopped baring his teeth and is giving me doggie kisses. The white one, however is not having any of it. He keeps his distance and continues to bark with a seriously pissed off look in his eye. After a few more minutes of trying to calm him down and wondering where the hell the owner is I decide to stand up. Big mistake. Both of the dogs go berzerk, barking like hell, circling, and showing their teeth. I try to walk away, but the white one snaps at one of my hands. Now this is where I began to really worry, though I'm not quite to "oh shit". I look up, searching for someone, see no one and resume trying to calm them down. Which doesn't happen. They're still freaking out. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a German Shepard barreling towards the commotion like "I'm ready to fsu (f*ck shit up)". OK, the dog didn't explicitly say this, but those were definitely the vibes I was getting. NOW I'm like "OH SHIT". I grab my tripod and began to run. The white dog launches into attack and goes after my calve, ripping my jeans (but not breaking skin ). I continue to run back to my car, repeating the steps in the first paragraph in about 45 seconds, cutting my hand on the barbed wire and leaving everything else on the briars. I got into my car and got the hell out of there. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon

| | | Mine happened yesterday. RosyCheeks and I were exploring this old Victorian style house on our way to the main destination (a mill). We parked across the street and walked over to the once driveway. Immediately, we noticed beer cans and footprints in the snow leading to the house. Though, with our expert tracking skills *cough* we determined that the footprints lead to the house, and then lead away again, as though they had entered and since left. We crept up to the house, not expecting to get in, as it was solidly boarded up. To our surprise, there was a board pried off at the back of the house - our POE. We entered the house and immediately saw splatters of varnish everywhere, one splash in particular spelled out "fuck god". Chalking it up to the partygoers that had left the beer cans, we delved into the house. We walked out of the entry room, and found the stairs. Not-so-quietly, we creeped up them, when all of the sudden, my phone starts vibrating. Unknown number. I pick it up, and for a moment there is silence. "Hello?" I say shakily, "Hi! Jack? Are you doing that exploration stuff?" "Yeah, grandma, we are actually in a house right now." It was at that point we heard movement in the house. "Just make sure you pick up the dog later, okay" "Yeah" I said, hushed, "ok, bye" and I hung up. The noise persisted, however. Slow, deliberate movement, like someone awakening from a -20 degrees celcius slumber. RosyCheeks looked at me and asked: "What should we do?" "Leave." And so we hurried out of the house and ran off. I was not about to find out who was slumbering in that house, especially not with just two of us. We agreed to come back further. While we both said it was probably nothing, we both knew in the back of our minds that was not true. I don't know if curiosity or fear drove us back to that place, but at night (we previously went that afternoon) we came back. Immediately, we noticed more tracks than we had left. Coming and going from entrances we had not used. I went up to the POE and shone my light in. Our friends were restless, claiming they saw a silhouette in one of the upper windows. I called out into the house. "Hello?" -louder- "Anyone home?" After a moment of silence, and being terrified of what they might sound like, fear/intelligence bested our curiosity, and we left. One day we will go back to that house, but for now, we will stick to other places. I've only been doing this for like 3 weeks and already I've experienced something like this - and I love it.

| | | A few days ago a friend an I where in a gigantic abandoned furniture factory. The factory is supposedly a place that drug deals happen every now an again. As we where going through the POE my friend had a really tough time getting in and took almost a whole minute to scale a small fence (his first time exploring). I was worried that someone may have seen him flailing about but kept pushing forward anyways. No one drove by the entire incident and we got in the building supposedly unseen. Once inside we explored the first floor- completely dark and full of perfectly redeemable furniture. We found what was a squatters room with a bed, lamp, and desk set up- though it appeared to be unused for quite some time. We got to the last room we hadn't explored- the brightest one so far and then heard something to the tune of, "Get out of there!" We both stood completely still and my friend literally said "Oh fuck, Oh shit, what do we do?!" I didn't answer and gestured to him that we head to the darkest part of the room and hide behind some big boxes. It sounded like there were steps coming from above us (my first choice for an exit was going up a level and exiting out from there- now gone) or near a loading dock door that led to a wide open field (second and last exit, not an option now). We chilled for a few minutes and the step sounds discontinued and no one continued to yell to get out. I figured we where being hyper-vigilant and that perhaps the "get out of there" wasn't directed at us but between others in the street. We proceeded to the second floor which took a bit to explore, then the third, then back down to the second for a hidden room I though we missed. At that point I clearly heard some one say, "Ok boys, get out of there now!" We paused, assessed, thought it was nothing, then heard it again! I contemplated leaving out a door to another opening and a fence I wasn't sure my buddy could scale quickly- so I decided that wasn't a great idea and that we would just go up to the top floor then the roof- who would follow us all the way up there right? haha We scaled a sketch ass ladder onto the roof and hung out for a bit- put at ease because we never heard anything again and couldn't see any movement on the ground for the thirty minutes or so that we where up there. Afterwards we explored outside on the bottom level for a bit and never encountered anyone. Maybe the shouting was directed at us, maybe not, or we where way to hyper-vigilant. All things together- I loved the adrenalin rush I got from the whole thing.

| | | My biggest "oh shit" moment was definitely while elevator surfing in an active building (it was the POE to the roof). For those who haven't surfed before, it basically involves opening the hoistway doors while the elevator is at the floor *below* you, and getting on top, and using the control panel on the top to move the elevator (this bypasses floor lockouts and other security). In this building, the floors are really far apart, so I had to call the elevator, let it start moving up, and time when I opened the hoistway doors to when the car was in the right place for me to climb on. When the hoistway doors open, a safety interlock stops the car, so there was no added danger in climbing on that way. Since it was an active building, I closed the hoistway doors right away so no-one saw... and this disabled the safety interlock, and the car moved to the floor below. It was now a 10 foot climb up smooth, featureless shaft to any exit... and this was my "oh shit" moment - I couldn't find the damn control panel! This meant I couldn't move the car, and so couldn't get out. I'd have to wait up there until morning, when someone used the elevator, and yell down to that person for help... and he'd have to call a security to get a technician to let me out, and I would be in HUGE shit. Luckily, I found that damn control panel behind one of the support beams after 20 very frantic minutes. Just goes to show you the unexpected ways that elevator surfing can be dangerous! I've also had security guards get into elevators I was surfing the top of - less "oh shit", but more "oh shit, I'd better not make a damn sound!". I definitely learnt a lesson from that one.

| | | I have one "oh shit" moment in which I was caught but I personally think this one is creepier: Three other people and myself are exploring an abandoned hotel for the second time. The first time we got inside, we heard a very faint alarm sound and decided to book it. This time, we heard the same sound but our POE had been open for a straight week so we figured the alarm had nothing to do with our entry. We're trying to be very discreet with sound and light because a rental car office still occupies part of the property. We start walking down a hallway with rooms on one side and the main hotel restaurant on the other when I notice a power strip on the ground. The electricity in the building was supposed to have been shut off when the owners failed to pay their bill but this power strip is on. Just as we realize the strip is indeed on and hooked up to a table lamp, we hear a noise from the room directly next to us; It sounded kind of like someone dropped something. We don't stick around to find out. As we walk back to my car on the outside of the building, one of the guys claims he sees a curtain move in one of the third floor rooms. I still don't know if this was true because the room the noise came from was on the first floor. So either whoever was inside had a very good understanding of the layout and made it to the third floor in a matter of seconds or there were multiple people inside. Furthermore, the hotel has security (albeit, the not very alert kind). Nonetheless, I feel they would have noticed if people were living inside.

| | | Oddly enough, my oh shit moment came from when I was doing UE before I knew it was UE. As a kid, I grew up on the US Air Force Academy for a few years. It's a relatively big base for its facilities - aside from the campus and the housing quarters, there's several thousand acres of undeveloped land. A good deal of that land is used as a training area, and over the decades a lot of buildings have been built and abandoned. Nothing like massive tunnel networks or anything, but more like brick-and-mortar setups used for urban tactics and the like - the civil engineering majors would build random shit for practice, really. I'd been hiking around and stumbled across one of these bigger buildings that had been abandoned for a bit. The door was chain locked so I was able to squeeze in without a problem. I spent a while exploring inside, but there wasn't much interesting - a few rooms built to practice breaching, but mostly just debris piled everywhere to make the environment look messy. I was wrapping up when I started hearing a lot of gunfire outside - blank rounds, but still gunfire. Cue "oh shit." One of the cadet squadron was doing a training exercise and I'd stumbled right into the middle of it (shame on their patrols for not friggin' seeing me tromping around the woods). Now, even though I was a base brat, the training area is very much off-limits, so I just ran into one of the rooms and hid in the shadows. The building was locked and unused, so I'd just have to wait for them to pass, right? Nope. I hear the cadets getting closer, with gunfire coming from all around the building. Turns out they spotted the place and decided to do impromptu "assault a static position" practice. And then, the door starts jiggling, and someone's working the chain. "Oh shit." Most of the "oh shit" came from the fact that I wasn't sure if they were using blanks or simunitions - the former meant I was safe, the latter meant I might be catching a rubber bullet if anybody had an itchy trigger finger. Plus the whole "trespass on a military facility" thing. Thankfully, they didn't have a key to the building, so they ended up moving on. I kept hiding in the building for an hour or so before sneaking out and returning to the residential area.
