A fun descent into the drains with Macaroo, Nephron, and a few others. The amount of airborne dust in these tunnels was intense, it took a toll on our lungs. These were CSO (combined sewer overflow) drains so they are dry 90% of the time. Elements of action included a nice greeting from a copperhead at the outfall, and a 30 foot ladder climb over an edge (see first pic) then the descent on the other side down my loosely secured fire escape ladder (see second pic). About 0.6 miles from the outfall to the sewer mains. Good times were had.

Nice series of drains you have there! I've never seen anything like it in person yet, so there is a bit of jealously streaming through my veins right now.

Awesome shots Turtl. Yes, that airborne dust once we got down there was extremely intense, but climbing that ladder was pretty fun.

Here are some of mine:

got to try out my new pentax k-5iis which is, as advertised, amazing in low-light focusing. definitely the darkest place i've ever shot. went to a greek festival afterwards and wondered why it smelled so bad in the church but then remembered i was knee deep in sewage a couple hours before.

muchos gracias to turtl for the invite!

That horrible dust is poop, no worries. Just powdered poop from all of the Atlanta poop systems pouring into this holding area until processing. When the system drains out and the residue is left to evaporate than the magic poop dust appears. Glad you guys wore masks cuz the last time we went I was coughing up shit for several days.

You got some wonderful shots here, kudos to who brought the powerful light to do it right. Turtl your second shot is exactly where RedSky climbed up the long ladder and than for no known reason he assumed that it was safe to step off into the darkness thinking that he was walking onto a flat surface. He twisted both ankles and got a nasty cut on the head for his mistake. I made him climb back up that sketch old rope ladder and only barely got him down the long ladder on the other side. We did the two man carry to bring him out of the drain and up the hill into Littlebrittle car to the emergency room for stitches. Fun days we had during Festicle. I've got some pics somewhere to throw out for y'all.

Your 5th shot of that long tunnel will go for several miles, if you can cross the river of feces without being sucked into the drain you will find some incredible old brickwork from the old Atlanta drain system. Everything here connects into the older systems and than dumps into a much much deeper system for holding before being sent to the treatment plant and than into the Chattahoochee river for our down stream neighbors to drink.

Once-ler, thanks for the info for on the poop dust haha. Sadly I did not wear a mask, only one person in our group wore one. I haven't felt sick since going down there friday afternoon, but we'll see. I imagine inhaling sewage dust for an hour can't be too good for you. As for exploring deeper down that tunnel in #5, i'm not sure how I feel. Don't know if theres a way to safely cross that river of sewage, but I know eventually my curiosity will get the best of me and ill figure something out. I remember you telling me that story about RedSky, I couldn't imagine being in that situation. That sketchy old ladder is still there though haha. Thanks for the kind words too
