Squatters and/or Homeless

I once explored an old house that had clearly become inhabited by a squatter. More specifically we guessed it was a drug addict judging by what was lying around. The floor was covered in random objects, many of them new but very filthy. Just an assortment of stuff. There was a mattress in the corner with blankets and jackets, almost as if to make a little nest.

The place made me feel really uncomfortable, so I left pretty quickly. The atmosphere of the house was just depressing, especially when I pictured living there. When all you have is a filthy abandoned house with no lights to curl up at night. My friend described it best... it was like walking into someone's rock-bottom addiction nightmare.

Anyone else come across places like this?

I once explored a completely empty house, no sign of any inhabitance. Every door was open except the one to the master bedroom in the back. Being the curious idiot that I am, I open the door. With the door about half open I could see a closet full of clothes on hangers, a few pairs of shoes, and the corner of a mattress. Heard someone stir and got the fuck outta there.

Pretty much everything I explore has homeless people in it. I've once squatted in an abandoned jail in Newark, NJ. Wasn't the nicest place but hey take what you can get right

Frankly, I've come to the mindset that if a place isn't covered with graffiti or filled with signs of someone squatting there presently or in the past, then it probably isn't abandoned / unoccupied in the first place. Much like Tarrant said, everywhere I go seems to contain evidence of squatters. Of course, this is in the city. I haven't done a lot of rural exploring yet, but those remote places I have found so far are also marked up the same way.

It seems like anywhere there are a few empty square feet, there is someone trying to claim that area as their own.

I ran into a scrapper once. He saved our asses from getting caught by security. We had a chat while we waited for security to pass by, and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. He seemed down on his luck and need the extra cash, he didn't give off the drug addict or alcoholic look. He gave us some info on what we should watch out for while exploring that place and gave us points of interest. It was a pretty nice encounter.

And... I caught it all on film and you guys should be seeing it shortly.

We were in an abandoned house once...we kept hearing noises, and eventually saw a little Mexican dude walking around and we all were like, 'Uhh...are you supposed to be here?!' ...the little dude said, 'I'm not supposed to be here' in horribly broken English and we told him we weren't either. So, he kept looking around the house...and so did we. Hahahaha.

Didn't he take a piece of wood or something and then walk off back home or something!? Hahahahaha.

He probably thought we lived there and he was like, 'Oh dang...'

I've never run into a squatter but I've seen their camps/belongings multiple times. One of my very first explores was an abandoned house in Columbus, Ohio. This house had been damaged by an arson fire and the second floor was completely burned out but the first floor was stable. This house was demolished a few months after I explored.

The only POE was in the rear near the kitchen. There was some canned food around and some cereal boxes in one of the cupboards but I assumed they were left when the house was abandoned.

I went through the rest of the house, coming to the front room last. When I looked in, I saw two mattresses with covers and pillows, coats hanging on a makeshift rack, and several other belongings. Nobody was there but I left right away (I had already been through the entire house except the front room by then anyway). I'd never run into a squatter camp before so it took me by surprise. Now I wonder where they went after their house was razed.

I've seen some nice abandoned places - relatively clean with power on, and easily accessible. In a hospital, we found a tv which still worked (and old style projection tv - turned it on, pushed sofas together and made a nice cozy area - even found a fan and plugged it in for air circ.

Yet in this same building a homeless person was squatting in the basement, in the dark, on top of a piece of old cardboard.

Guess that's the result of being whacked out of your mind on drugs and alcohol.

Only ever run into a bonafide squatter once, in a house in a small town in Belgium. We entered through the busted out kitchen window and the place looked a mess but had rubbish piled up against doors blocking them, we went upstairs and suddenly were faced with a squatter sat on a bed watching something on a MacBook! He grunted something at us in another language and we left pretty sharpish as the place just felt odd with him in there.

I ran into a very very fresh squatter camp in a big old farmhouse once also, although there were no squatters in residence we walked in to se a fresh loaf of bread on the side and pots and pans on the cooker, we left quite quick after that!

Remember when you come across a squat, that you're invading someone's home. Squatting isn't safe - I certainly had no illusions about it when I was squatting - and you (dear invader) could be anyone: police, security, scrappers, other homeless people, drug addicts, or worse. The little sense of safety that you're able to carve out is precious, so do every squatter a favour: when you find evidence of a squat, leave. When you run into a squatter, apologize and leave.

Even if only temporary, that place is someone's home. Purposefully invading that makes you a jerk.

I'm sorry but fuck that. It's not anyone's home any more than it is my photography studio. I'm kind and polite but I'm not going to apologize to someone just because we're both someplace we shouldn't be and they got there first.

Ran into my first real squatter with Astro the week before last. We were just leaving the brewery through the warehouse area and I hear a cough, so we stopped and looked around and quickly notice a man sitting on some steps nearby. I waved, and he lifts up a half full bottle of Cola, and says "I got some soda pop!" The whole time we were walking away he just keeps mumbling about his soda pop.

He was really proud of that soda.

Also. I myself have been homeless. Although I was fortunate enough to have a job and a car through most of it. Seeing as how police will harass you for sleeping in your car, I set up a tent on top of some abandoned apartments downtown. It was higher than all the surrounding buildings that weren't also abandoned. I brought pool chairs up there, a propane grill, and made a "staircase" out of bricks for all my friends that couldn't make it up the wall. I would take the bricks and hide them in one of the apartments every night to ensure no unwanted visitors would find me in my sleep.

Seeing as how stand-alone homes are pretty common spots for squats or stash houses, I never really recommend spending a lot of time poking around in them, at least in the areas I go. They're just more common and more ergonomic for people to live in than a lot of other abandoned places, and usually easier to get into and out of without much fuss.

Obviously, it's for the best to leave anybody else's stuff you find alone. They're using this as a home for whatever the reasons, and obviously just walking into someone's home is grounds for serious confrontation.

Haven't run into anyone actually squatting in many years at the places I go, just scrappers and other people exploring who are obviously transients just passing through.

I've been on both sides of the squatter thing so I'm very polite and un-obtrusive when I run into anyone who is staying/sleeping somewhere, and I've found that most squatters are that way as well unless they're influenced by drugs and/or alcohol. Legit squatters usually are pretty decent people and like having company so long as they're not in a shitty mood and you're not disrespectful/attract heat. I've ran into some really cool homebums in the hobo jungles while traveling or in abandoned buildings who have told some cool stories.

If you're gonna go sticking your camera up in their shit to post HDR shots of their value village jackets and can of beans to your blog site though, you're a fuckin' dick. (I don't think many people on here would do that anyway though)

Have had quite a few times where I found an obvious squat but never the squatter. Some really nice set ups like a clean old farmhouse with hammock, dresser for clothes etc. And the opposite end of the spectrum, filthy gross mattress on floor, used needles everywhere.

Once I was in the lower floor of a house and heard thumps from upstairs, didn't go further. Another time in winter my best friend and I were approaching a house, fresh snow on the ground. I noticed some size 15 lookin' footprints going in, but none going out. Decided I did not want to meet the owner of those feet!

Some homes I have been in are so nice I have felt like I could live there...
