My brother and i received trespassing tickets once. We went to court on the scheduled date, and i talked the judge into dropping them. It helped that we had no prior trespassing convictions on our records, though.

I was cuffed by police to another explorer once, good thing I knew the building better than the cops, the explorer trusted me enough to follow my lead when I decided to kill my flashlight and take off, and handcuffs can be broken with a multi-tool

Biggest thing I learned that night, climbing into a tunnel ... quickly down a ladder .... while cuffed at the wrist to another person is quite the task

Still got my half of the handcuff set as a keepsake from a crazy night, so does the other person, every now and again we get together and match the cuffs up for a good laugh

The only time I got caught by the police was at an abandoned theme park. They told me they were there because somebody reported vagrants living there. Once I explained that I was just taking pictures, they didn't seem too concerned that I was there. It probably helped that I wasn't actually inside any of the structures when they saw me. They ended up telling me to have a good vacation and left.

It was insane, we went to a place where I know the cops would never enter, I kept telling my friend " dont worry , I promise you wont get arrested tonight " we were on a roof with only one way on or off, and i looked over and saw a cop come through the opening... there were some other kids we didnt know already there, so the cop cuffed me to my friend, cuffed two of the other kids together, and then cuffed the last kid behind his back, we came in off the roof and started down a stair case barely big enough for one person, I knew at the bottom was a door into the vast tunnel system and then the tunnels under the tunnels, I happened to be first down the stairs with my friend, then the other two kids behind me, then the single kid , then the cop, I interlaced my fingers with my friends fingers, squeezed his hand and killed my light ( keep in mind it was 2 AM ) we hauled down the stairs, I was at the first floor, and I could hear the cop a few floor up say " hey slow down " ... yeah right ,see ya.....

once in the tunnels we were like how the fuck do we get out of these cuffs, i stuck the needle nose of my multitool in one of the chain links and pushed it as hard as I could against my wrist, and it just snapped... after that, lucky for my friend he's skinny like a toothpick he slid right out of his cuff, i tried to do the same but clicked it tighter by accident.. whoops, when we got back to the roof, there was cops EVERYWHERE, dogs , a fucking copter,it was intense, we hung out in the subtunnels for hours till it dissipated a bit when we thought it had cooled off enough, I called my friend to come pick us up ( my girlfriend at the time had my keys to my car and got arrested by another cop while we were on the roof, she and a friend were walking around inside )

When I got home I had to use bolt cutters to get the cuff off lol... that was about 10 years ago, thank fully the 7 year statute of limitation for something like that has passed, plus in my state running from the cops is just a misdemeanor ... though we were never formally arrested and the cop never read us our rights, so im not really sure where it legally would have stood anyway

There were 4 of us leaving an abandoned flour mill in a prominent location of downtown with an amazing rooftop view. Two of us had crawled out a small crack in a busted door out into the alley. Me and my friend were still inside. Out of seemingly nowhere (we checked everything out from the roof before we came down) a group of about 6 cops came into the alley with flashlights. We were trapped. They didn't see us hiding on the first pass, but they came back again before we could all get back in the building and spotted us. Guns were drawn, dogs were threatened at us, one of the cops yelled, "DO YOU WANT TO GET SHOT?!". They knew some of us were still inside, so we surrendered and crawled out the door crack at gun point. We all got cuffed and searched immediately. All they found on us was camera shit and a huge bag of nuts in the pocket of my friend's zubaz. They separated and question us. We all had the same story. We told them the way we went in wasn't posted No Trespassing signs and we didn't force entry (which was true), so they knew there wasn't much they could do.

After that the tension eased. We just chatted with them for a bit. We found out one of the neighboring apartment building residents called us in while we were on the roof. They asked us if we were "those urban explorer guys" and warned us not to go in the university steam tunnels because they are wired to the teeth with cameras and they'd get to come find us if we went down there. We found out one of the cops was retiring that week and could care less about some dumb kids trespassing. We were awkwardly laughing with them by the end.

They ended up sending us on our way without ever actually warning us or telling us not to come back. On the way out one of the cops said something sassy over his car loudspeaker and pretended drive through a puddle next to us and drench us. And the dude that searched me never gave me back my $40 flashlight. douche.

I heard if u steal handcuffs from the cops it's considered stolen property or something, but you'd have to implicate yourself with photos or something. There's no statute of limitations on posession of stolen property if you still have it, or so i hear. Some local guys I know might want to take a look at those, they're like afficianados of handcuffs.

Also wouldn't stealing handcuffs count as taking something from a location? I thought that was against the UER laws?

We like to explore at Detroit Public Schools. There are dozens of great old buildings. But the downside is that they have their own branch of police and use motion activated cameras to alert them of scrappers. They've caught me twice with sneaky camera placement and I didnt realize until it was too late.

Usually, though, we do see the cameras and are down the street waiting for them to arrive.

The first time they gave us a really hard time and wrote us tickets for Entering Without Permission. The second time, we saw them pull onto the street so we had time to have a quick debate about what to do and prepare for their entry. We decided to keep on shooting right up until the point they came in on us. Right away when they saw us with our tripods set up, the cop just yelled "AW HELL NAW! YALL GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE! COME ON MAN!" and they sent us on our way without even checking our ID's.

Lol well at least thats reasonable. I think if youre being destructive u deserve to be charged but if youre being harmless they should just send u on ur way.

I agree. They need to be harsher on scrap metal thieves. They have no shame here in Detroit. Of the 90 or so school buildings that are for sale, my rough estimate is that 2/3 of them are unsalvageable and total losses. They steal everything. Literally everything, from the pipes and wires to the lockers, window frames, even the VPS security panels.

I guess if I ever got caught again I could play the "Hey remember me from the local news those few times when I had to call them about getting your water turned off from the broken pipes? Yea that was me. I helped you guys out and saved you money and stuff" card. Hopefully that would work and I'd get let go hahah
