The art in your systems is out of control! Has there always been a lot of drain art in those parts, or is it a more recent phenomenon? Denver didn't have much at all until about six years ago when it suddenly started to appear in droves.

I always imagined the drains out that way were sweet. Such a great thread, can't believe I missed it somehow.

Pretty sure the drains out here have always been graffiti hot spots -- keep in mind we have 3 major metropolitan cities (SF, Oakland, and San Jose) all clustered up out here so there's a lottt of underground drainage going on through these cities, not to mention many of our drains can easily flow either to the bay or the ocean

Something about that character I just love -- only know of maybe 6 of his characters scattered around SF/Peninsula but he's always a treat!

His flickr account (idk if its actually him or not) messaged me with some intel on one of his spots but its a tough one to get to b/c its so public....

he's got a couple stickers around the SFO area, mostly inside of newspaper racks, and he had hand written/drawn tag on a bridge in millbrae that just got painted over.

Yeah, I love it. It's so weird to spend hours underground, with art all along the way. Speaking of hours under ground, these pics are from my favorite drain of all time - we probably spent 2-3 hours underground as we walked about 6-7 miles round-trip exploring the depths of this one. There's even a branch we partially explored but turned around after getting pretty far with a constantly lowering ceiling. I'd like to go back and finish that one someday.

Anyway.. the pics

1. Me chillin' with the Turtles

2. One way up

3. Love this guy... he drank too much

4. In we go...

5. There was so much mist in the air from this waterfall, glad I had had my respirator

One of my favorites too. I've done miles of walking in there as well but I've never attempted to walk to the very end. I saw a bunch of photos (maybe on UER) of someone that did walk to the end but it seemed like it might be necessary to get wet at the end as it's tidal and taking a swim with all my gear isn't something I'd choose.

Here's the same spot as your #6 with a little LED lighting

Did Freska ever finish his mural? This is what it looked like last time I was there. Even when I was there it was impossible to show the whole thing in one shot:

We got pretty far, till our boots were at at their limit. Will have to get waders.
If our GPS was correct though, we weren't too far from the bay.

Unfortunately no. The wall is still marked off as "reserved" but doesn't look like it's been painted in years. I wonder if Freska got caught?

This has definitely become my favorite drain with a bunch of fun wackiness that has began to show up here:

Maps have been put up throughout the tunnel to help you get around:

[had to edit the map slightly because it otherwise gives away the creek location]

There's a map at each station, which has a placard telling you where you are:

We walked the entire map, which is super awesome -- where the tracks split on the map are actually other tunnels you can follow!
The station names are fun to try to figure out too, for instance the station "Oasis" is a section of the tunnel where light shines through the grated rooftop where there's now a swing set up!

Station "Manhole" is a Gay Bar haha, or rather, a Bay Gar

Oh and there's also turtles that live down there now!!

These pics are really great! I have been to one of the places in pgathriller's pics from the previous page in South Bay.

I haven't been to East Bay yet, it seems like there are the most interesting creek/drain tunnels, I should check it out someday.

I was planning to see if there are interesting drains in SF, but from my understanding they are not easy to find since the city uses a combined sewer/drain system. I was still lucky to find this one.

Well, this thread really peeked my interest yesterday, so I have taken the day off to explore more drains in South Bay. I finally found an interesting one after rolling my bike for a few miles.

You see the bag in the last picture? That's not mine, I just found it inside the drain, with $100 cash inside and a few more things. I decided to follow the rules and not take anything from it, but I really wonder who decided to leave it in the middle of the drain with all that cash visible.

Did you determine what variety of magic substance was in the ziplock on the last picture?

I don't think "the rules" apply to cash. if it rains all the cash will be washed away. i would have taken it and left a note. great pictures!

According to me, the most plausible explanation is that it belongs to a homeless person, though I did not see anyone in the drain. I think I will go back next week and check if it is still there, then I can know more about the substance in the ziplock as well.
