I am just wondering if any of you guys can tell me what sort of supplies I would need before heading out to check for abandonments and such. For example: Compass, water bottle, night vision, radio, ect. Also what shoes should I wear? Should I bring food? Should I have a map? Those type of things. Thanks in advance.

Usually, I just explore inner city abandonments in rust belt cities, mostly Cleveland. When I go, I wear some old jeans, a jacket, and some old beat up running shoes. If you're worried about asbestos in the building that you're going to, I'd bring a respirator too.

I also carry a backpack with me that contains two flashlights, a headlamp, extra batteries, bottled water, band aids, and a rope that I very rarely use, but it's for descending elevator shafts, or going down floors when there's no other way.

Thanks for the info. I love the rope idea. I should keep that one in mind.

i always have a respirator for going into any structure ( asbestos and lead are not your friends )

but my generic look is a pair of old steel toe boots with some jeans and a t-shirt under a jean jacket.

I also carry a headlamp ,3 flashlights + associated batteries, a couple of chem lamps (glow sticks), my leatherman multitool, a couple of clif bars, a bottle of water, some tape and of course my respirator.

Only thing I would recommend, especially if you're going to be doing drains, is an extra pair of shoes, as well as a neck strap for your camera, you do NOT want to learn that the hard way

I carry the essentials: flashlight(s)/headlamp, proper clothing; doing any climbing?=gloves, shoes/boots (depending on the activity), etc., camera and tripod + accessories, a trusty blade/multi-tool, toilet paper/hand sanitizer and beer. Don't forget the beer. Oh, and a sense of adventure.

I also stock my pack with extra stuff i might need: disposable rain coat, chalk, black marker, extra socks, snacks, etc.

Basically, bring what you think you'll need. The bare minimum, proper clothing and a light source/extra batteries (especially underground.)

Camera, flashlight, maybe tripod, respectable-looking clothes as I don't want to be stereotyped by people who might report me to the authorities.

It all depends on where you want to go and what you want to do there.

In my case, the bare minimum for exploring abandoned buildings would probably be proper shoes and long pants, and perhaps a flashlight if the building has been boarded up or you're going underground. If it's warm out there, it might be a good idea to take something to drink as well - dehydration is a bitch.

Common sense, Maybe a flashlight if you remember, Camera if you want, Maybe some water if your smart. I mean its walking through a bunch of broken down buildings, just use your gut instinct and don't carry anything stupid, like a pistol.

Lube.

But really, I usually just bring old, sturdy shoes, a good flashlight, and old clothes. Just take it logically, and it'll come together.

Whatever fits in my cargo pants. My point'n'shoot, three palm-sized led flashlights, a small pocket knife, a handkerchief, spare rechargeable batteries, pocket-pack of tissues, lighter/bowl, Sharpie, cell-phone, bottle-opener. I usually have an ever-diminishing bag of beer too. Once in a while if I bring my 6-pack cooler, I'll toss a sandwich in there. I despise backpacks and I don't use a tripod.

Long sleeved shirts and long pants are usually a must for me when hiking or exploring, seeing as there can be often be things that scratch you. Also, a decent pair of running/hiking/construction shoes. Some kind of photography equipment is also helpful.

Cheap-ish automotive gloves, a flashlight, and a paper respirator, mainly. Occasionally I'll bring more or less.
