How's my editing?

So what do you guys think? I took this with a bad camera, so the quality is a bit eh but really I just want some feedback on how my editing is. I just made it b/w, kept the color in the pole, added some glow, and a bit of noise to the edges of the pic. So yeah, let me know what you think!

Editing choices?
Execution?

For editing feedback, it might help to see what you started with also?

I think keeping the pole in color divides the picture in half too harshly. It's almost in the center, but not quite. It seems like the composition would have some nice thirds in it. The shutters are great elements, but they seem to lose their sense of importance next to the colorful pole.

I'm not sure where the glow is, which I think is a good thing. As a broad general stroke with editing, the most impressive edits are the parts that go unnoticed.

Hopefully that's the kind of feedback you were looking for.
Again, I think for editing feedback, it'd be interesting to see the original too, but maybe it's better not to be initially primed by it. So perhaps it's good not to post it upfront.

Any feedback is better than none, so yes, I would say it is helpful. As for the glow, I actually ended up using very little because it made the pole way too over saturated. Anyway, here's the original if you want to compare.

As the request is for editing feedback, the whole "selective colouring" is pretty over done and kinda cheesy. When you leave one thing coloured, the viewers eye is drawn to the colour. And if this thing isnt interesting, the "effect" is lost.

Sure, snap an image of a double decker bus in London and turn everything to bw but the red can work. But I find many many people do processing like this, or like HDR, as a means of adding interest in a boring image.

A well processed image starts with a well composed image.

So going with selective colouring on any image is a bit boring imo. Google how to compose a photo, reading up on rule of thirds, golden ratios, triangles, leading lines, etc etc

I prefer the original, though tbh, it's not a very strong photo.

If I were to edit it, I'd likely straighten the pole.

I mean really the point of it was to see what I could do with it after it was taken, I basically said to my friend, "here take a picture," so yeah. But still, useful advice you guys have given me, I appreciate it.

As rob.i.am stated it's not a strong image to start with...but it has potential.

1. Focus, the subject imo, the person stuck in the vent should be in focus, not the vents itself, adjust the focus or stop the lens down a bit more to give you more depth of field.

2. Straighten the image, make sure the pipe is sitting vertical, it will improve the composition.

3. Lighting, if you can pop a flash onto the person, or use a flashlight under them to give a bit more drama.

Now for the editing, selective de-saturation, that's a bit nope from me, it's an overused cliche in today's digital editing world. Yes I've used it in the past at client's request but I never show those images in my portfolio.

I hope this wasn't too harsh..as I said, potential

A LOT of people aren't a fan of 'spot coloring', as you've done in your first image. Personally, I think it depends on the image. However, if you are going to take that route, I can see the gray/desaturated edges of the pole. If you're using Photoshop, there are some tools that work better for this purpose (spot coloring or the selection process, in general). I'm not sure what tools you used to accomplish this, but I can tell that at some point...you drew a simple rectangle on the pole and desaturated the rest.

That being said, taking a BW aspect over desaturation is important too. Desaturation basically empties the image of ALL color. The black and white option (I have this in PS), allows you to emphasize certain colors to be darker black or brighter white. It basically gives you MUCH more control over BW. I suppose, it allows you to show depth. However, with desaturation, you can manually adjust the layers/curves of the image to emphasize your blacks and whites and grays, too.

hi, it is good to start learning tools like photoshop and lightroom, and do basic editing functions with them. it appears you are teaching yourself how to do this, and I can see that you have performed some basic editing in your picture.

if this was your goal, you succeed.

I think what others are getting at is more the question of "what are you trying to achieve with this picture". what interesting subject is on display, or what story is being told? the editing should serve to help display the subject or tell the story more effectively, or do so in a way that could not be done in the original.

editing to edit is fine if you are just trying to learn. if you are trying to display moments from your explorations, I would be more selective with your images and edits.

imo, if you don't like the un-edited picture, its probably not worth editing.

Its good to play around with software though.

I'm not sure what tools you used to accomplish this,

I used paint.net with the lasso select tool, I did kind of a meh job on it.
