JC Smith Building *Picture heavy*

Came across this building and got permission from the owner to take pictures of it and he gave me the all access pass and even wanted me to make him an offer on the building haha

A little history of the building. It was built in 1885 with an Italianate design. Wellington pioneer merchant JC Smith commissioned the building and it was built with limestone quarried at a nearby city. Because the limestone resembled marble the building came to be called the Marble Block. Smith dealt in boots and shoes but later broadened his ware to include clothing. The building was only moderately damaged in the 1892 tornado. In 1906 Smith retired from the clothing business and sold his stores to his sons Ed and Joe which freed him up to devote his time to other ventures. Smith Men's Clothes were at this location until 1943. In 1963 Glasco Drug occupied the building. Glasco Drug remodeled and expanded in 1969 after buying the building.

Wow truly an amazing old building. And yeah, that drug store facade is freakin' hideous! What were they thinking?

great old building. "they don"t make 'em like that anymore."

+1 on drug store facade = crap

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

I agree. Most of the windows on the south side of the building have been boarded over so there is no natural light. I'm just glad that I have a good flash on my camera.

Very cool, the interior would look amazing restored.

Looks like at one time it was occupied by hippy hipsters!
