This was my 2013.

Let me paint a picture: I was working at a music store in Oklahoma City on May 30th. My wife was at work, she teaches at an elementary school in Moore, and my daughter was with my mother-in-law at her house (she lived in the neighborhood across the street from me).

We knew there was a good chance of "inclement weather", but of course we didn't pay much attention. When you live here long enough, you learn not to worry too much before the storm hits.

The storm hit quick.

Here's a fast intro into Oklahoma City Metro geography. Tornado hits in El Reno, moves East/Northeast, and grinds all the way through my hometown.

My house sits right about halfway between I-40 and Plaza Towers right on its path.

So, tornado touches down in El Reno and proceeds to cruise down 149th street (the street that divides my house from my in-laws). Cell phone service is already a thing of the past.

I call my mother in law's home number, hoping she doesn't answer.

"Hello?"
"Um....why are you still in the house?"
"We're waiting for [father-in-law] to get home so we can leave."
"No...no time. Get out now. This is heading straight for you."
"Okay. We're leaving now."

........................nothing..........................

I hear nothing. Not a word. I know that my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and my two-year old daughter are driving down the road and this thing is chasing them. My heart immediately drops and stays there for what seems like an eternity. I watch the news as it tears down my street, just missing my side-street and crashing through the houses that separate me from my mother-in-law.

My heart started beating again when I got the text saying they had found shelter.

Disclaimer being this: these are pictures of my neighborhood. These are not tourist pictures. I wanted to share with you guys what happened here.

Not all decay is as slow as we are accustomed to, and it has within its devastation a certain beauty in its power.

So glad to know your daughter and mother-in-law are okay.

I know those things are scary and devastating. I've been in a couple of them. Glad everyone was safe and I'm sorry your 2013 had such a tragic event.

It was quite an experience. I don't think I'll sign up for another one...but then again, having a mortgage in Oklahoma is a little like the same thing.

Anyway...I heard requests of voices from this area, so I thought I would oblige.

My nephews and niece were at a big softball tourney in that immediate area. Was a scary day for sure.

The kids grandma and dad were with me and the kids were with mom. I sort of know the feeling.
