| | | | Respiartors/Gas Masks < on 10/28/2013 8:42 PM >
| | | I've explored a bit in my life....starting as a child in the sewer drains in my neighborhood, drain pipes as a teenager to some abandoned places as an adult. I've never worn any type of breathing protection. But getting into this more seriously and looking at tons of pics on here, I'm seriously considering a respirator or gas mask. Can anyone recommend something? I've found that being Halloween season it is a bit difficult to find something that's not a costume or prop. I know I can go to a reputable place and find what I need for an exaggerated price but that's where shopping around on ebay and such helps. I've always had a thing for old war gas masks but those are most times expensive. Here are a couple things I'm looking at: http://www.allergy...m/iscivgasmas.html http://www.colepar..._Large/UX-81661-15 I'm not sure how effective but this one looks damn cool! http://www.airsoft...sk-Fan-p/66625.htm

| | | I got my respirator from Home Depot for like $25-$30...you don't really need a gas mask, it's a bit overkill, can fog up and gets very sweaty and can wind you easily too...unless MAYBE your doing sewage systems or chemical plants with chemicals still in the place. Eye protection usually isn't an issue and if it is just get some cheap goggles. Most of the ones you linked here I believe protect more against vapors BUT your biggest concern is going to be ASBESTOS so look for one that protects more from that instead. This is the one I have: http://www.amazon....sbestos+respirator This one would be the next step up I guess: http://www.amazon....sbestos+respirator But something along those lines

| | | I wouldn't go as far as getting a gas mask. I bought one, but just because I wanted to have one, you just never know, lol But this is what I have, which is the second link that urbexinc posted: http://www.homedep...72189#.Um9FbfmbNyU And like urbexinc said, you really want something that will help against asbestos and then you're covered for all the other yucky stuff that is inhaled.

| | | I find that my biggest concern isn't asbestos, but instead, mold. I rarely wear a respirator but I do own one. There are a few locations I can think of right off the bat that I won't go to without one. Most of the time I don't see a need. Asbestos is a danger if you are messing with it or you disturb it, otherwise it's never been a problem for me. I got mine from Home Depot and think I paid about $30 or so. Worth it, but not worth going all out. You aren't exploring a toxic pit of molten gasses, and if you are..THEN consider a gas mask. But mostly, I don't think it's a necessity.

| | | As long as you get a respirator or mask that has filters that are P100 rated, you are fine.

| | | Sorry man, that isn't even a gas mask. Only Eye protection. The front of that is mesh and the filter does nothing. Gas masks are not necessary. I agree with everyone else. I have a half mask from home depot that I haven't used in years. It's my personal decision but I don't think it's necessary to wear one in most situations. I went to a battery factory years ago that was on the Texas Superfund Registry. Saw lots of lead dust, 50 gal drums of who knows what and an open vat about the size of a fish tank that had a label over it that said Hydrochloric Acid... I decided this was a good opportunity to put some NBC rated gas masks to good use.
