Oh Ed...

Have you even read the thread title?

Yeah bro. Try as I might, I couldn't bring that blown out skylight down to earth. The rest of it darkened up quite nicely though.

Why don't you just climb up on the roof, throw a bush or part of a tree on the skylight, and reshoot?

I agree with everyone else, you'd be better off manually combining the photos with layer masks.

Here's an edit I did, I only used the darkest two images and some dodging/burning and other color/contrast edits. I built layer masks and combined what I wanted from each photo. I burned the skylight and the edges a bit because I played too much Silent Hill when I was a kid and it permanently affected what I think is attractive.

I personally think it's near impossible to use the HDR tools in Photoshop productively. I hate the way it makes things look (almost always fake, over-sharpened, and clown-vomit-esque).

I did my edit in about five minutes, you could probably make yours look even better if you spent longer on it.

edit: Just noticed I basically told you to do the same thing as sirpsychosexy. sorry either way, hop it helps

Just a quick edit. I think the problem with your original was too much brightness in your midtones without enough use of the shadow end of the histogram to compensate, making the details look a bit polarised.

I tried Photoshop's built-in HDR merge once, and immediately hated it. I use a Lightroom plugin called lr-enfuse and it's excellent. You can select individual frames to blend, or stack lots of brackets and blend in batch mode, and it will export in whatever format you prefer.

For this, I took only your second and fourth frames and blended with lr-enfuse, upped the contrast with tone curve and balanced that with the highlight and shadow sliders. Other than setting the tone curve, no color treatment was applied

(I'm happy with the composition and find it to be frankly unassailable)

It was a hair crooked and off-center. I fixed that too

There's a lot of personal preference involved with editing photographs. I agree with the other people posting here that using the bracketing of your photos that you have is your best bet, as your camera can only expose well for one thing, you can expose twice and use the benefit of digital photography to mask and blend the parts you want exposed in or out. How much you choose to make this obvious or subtle is up to you.
