| | | best time to explore < on 9/14/2013 1:17 AM >
| | | I have been exploring for a couple months now and i happened upon an abandoned church and a house in the same area, the problem is it is a residential type area...i don't want to be mistaken for a burglar or whatever so when would be the prime time to check it out?

| | | Broad daylight, better to have people think you're doin what you're supposed to, the. Have them wonder why there's some weirdo wandering around at. Night.

| | | There's no one right answer for this, but all other things being equal, I agree with Ricky. Abandoned buildings are a lot safer during the day, photography is better, and you look a lot less suspicious.

| | | Regardless of time, don't look suspicious. Act like you know what you're doing and that you're completely legit. Have a reason for being there, photog student, journalist student, whatever...you act suspicious or sneaky, you're more apt to be in trouble when you're caught than otherwise.

| | | I go in broad daylight as well. If you're caught by a cop in a place at noon compared to 3am, well that could be the difference between being told to leave, and being charged with breaking and entering. If you can go earlier morning on Saturday or Sunday. Usually everyone's off work and still sleeping. I usually pick early afternoon late mornings on the weekends. Good luck!

| | | All of the above, plus....Find a nice button-down oxford shirt and an old pair of chinos. Skip the backpack and use a belt pouch or fanny pack (eeeW) for your gear. BE the nerdy student, unoffensive and innocent. [last edit 9/14/2013 8:51 PM by WEKurtz - edited 1 times]

| | | I agree, it IS a big difference between urban and rural exploring in certain places. The county has it's own set of risks too. Personally, I am more at risk of physical harm when I am in the county (around here) than I am in the cities or larger metro areas. Homeless, cops and crackheads don't hold a candle to the moonshiners, cattle farmers and small scale growers that may "occupy" the land around that abandoned church, the vacant homestead, or that old mill site down on the creek back yonder past the holler. Just thinkin' out loud. Hide in plain view. That's what I was always taught as a kid!

| | | I agree with exploring during day time. Another poster also made a good point about exploring early in the morning during the weekends. I'd avoid exploring when it's dark to avoid my flashlight giving me away.

God I love that phrase "Pics or it didn't happen", the photographers version of "Put up or shut up". Heading out to explore an old cottage at daybreak tomorrow. Some houses nearby and some traffic. I'll walk the walk and post a pic right here.
