wtf a raccoon

Today I was exploring an abandoned church in a suburb outside of New York City. I'm fairly sure I was the one of the only humans to enter the place in about 30 years. It's not really much of an exploring destination, but I'd driven by it on my way to another abandonment and figured I'd check it out on the way home.

Anyway, I encountered a raccoon on a dark upper floor. All I saw of it at first were two glowing eyes out of the darkness reflecting my headlamp. I turned on my more powerful flashlight and nearly shat myself.

I am very much a city dweller, and while huge rats and rooms full of hundreds of pigeons don't faze me, this thing scared the hell out of me. I eventually called a friend who advised me to scare it off by making a lot of noise, which worked.

Any other tips for warding off animals in an abandonment?

Ugh my skin is still crawling.

They're more afraid of you than you are of it etc. I can't imagine not having to deal with raccoons on a regular basis in abandonments, going through my trash, picking fights with cats, or raiding through your camp site. Clever bastards.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

Raccoons as cute as they look sometimes are a big disease carrier a lot of times. I would keep a "walking" stick or something to keep it at arms length. Also the coon is squating. Racoons like suburban areas due to the trash they can go through. So this "it's there home" really isn't justified.

I've only ever experienced raccoons near an abandonment one other time, and it wasn't inside. There were three of them chilling in the parking lot of a semi-abandoned mental hospital we were exploring. Not scary in the slightest. We left each other alone. But the raccoon in the church, the sound it made...it wanted me dead in pieces.

I live in the middle of backwoods nowhere PA, so running into at least one wild animal is pretty much a given even if you're just taking a quick walk down the road at night.

99.97% of the time, whatever creature you run across just wants to be left alone and won't try to do anything to harm you. As many times as I've run into bears, dogs, raccoons, bobcats, etc., I've never once been attacked by anything. I've been chased for fifty yards or so by a particularly irritable bear, but nothing worse than that. Typically, making yourself look as large and intimidating as possible by holding your hands up and yelling and whatnot is the way to go. Unzip your coat and spread it wide open. Shine your light right at it. Yell as loudly as you possibly can. There are lots of things you can do to scare an animal off.

If you're particularly unlucky and you do get attacked by something, give it a nice taste of your boots first. If you have a weapon of some sort, even just a big D-cell flashlight or a tripod, smack it with that a couple of times and hope for the best. I've heard that if you're being mauled by a bear that it's best to curl up into the fetal position and wait it out, but there's no way in hell I'm about to get shredded by a bear without putting up whatever fight I can muster first. If you happen to be deep in grizzly country where bear attacks are actually a real danger, you should seriously consider carrying a good rifle with you on your adventures.

Of course in most locations, the worst you'll run into is a black bear, which are easily scared off in everything but the worst of circumstances.

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark.

like a boss. but the two lit up pinpricks of its eyes...that was EXACTLY how the thing looked. for a second I felt like I was in the Buffy episode where they all get possessed by the hyena with the light-up eyes.

Do NOT chase it into a corner!

Racoons are fucking vicious beasts. They can really mess you up bad with their claws if they get cornered.

Most animals you just wave your arms and yell and look big and crazy and threatening (bigger than them anyway) and they're like "this person is a whack job" and then they leave.

Do not follow this information for bears, jaguars, sloths, rhinocerouses, tigers, or yetis.

If you see any of the above animals, you're probably off-course by quite a distance. If you find yourself alone facing off with a sloth, you totally fucked.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

Reminds me of a guy I met in the wood that was visiting from Boston alone in the woods and took a baseball bat because he was scared of mountain lions. Anyways Personally I would try to get closer to a bear for pictures. And sloths are one of the dumbest things ever. I believe they sometimes can mistake their arm for a branch grab it and fall to their death. I would much find a yeti that would be amazing.
