Haha, yeah. Didn't work.

When I go that route, I like to use a long sleeved henley. Then I fold the bottom end of it up, about 4" to 5" at a time, till it's folded up to a complete 4 to 5", and is between the sleeves.

Then i put my mouth/nose right in the middle and tie the long sleeves back around my head and let them hang down. The softer the shirt the more comfy it is.

Just FYI and all. It works well sometimes.

Wow, thanks for sharing that thread. And thanks Lampie for asking (I'm sure this question crops up every once in a while).

I'm new(ish) at this and was wondering the same thing. Mostly, I don't want to look to conspicuous if caught. But that's nothing compared to life-threatening respiratory illness...

I'm a contractor that does a lot of hospital work, ground up and existing. N95 masks(the lovely little white ones) are not safe, and OSHA doesn't even like the fact they exist. Everyones advice to use a half face respirator is spot on if you're going into anything that *could* have hazards.

The P100 and above grade filters are worth is, they last a while if you aren't abusing them, and the cost isn't bad. The respirator plus overkill filters at home depot will run you about ~$40. Much less than your health and/or life.

But...i also have a few hardhats, safety vests, safety glasses, three long range radios, etc. Not only do i like to be safe, but going the extra few steps also prevents people from calling the cops on you. Psychology is your friend, if you look like you are doing something important, no one will bother you.

(If you want to test this, grab a fire extinguisher and run anywhere you want to, no one will stop you.)

Except that people can't always find the *proper* filters they need for the hazards they will face, at places like Home Depot / Lowes. Usually Grainger has all the supplies you will need though.

I spend thousands of hours a year in mines. I know for a fact that wearing a N95 mask while I'm exploring keeps me from hacking and coughing up a lung for the next week afterwards.

So I wouldn't say they're complete shit all together, but as stated over and over, know the hazards you may face, and protect yourself accordingly.

I've never worn a mask exploring, because it honestly never occurred to me--I've only explored around ten abandonments. Everything I have explored thus far has been an abandoned building, I've never gone into mines before. But tomorrow I'm going to an old psych hospital, and the postings I've read on it on other websites have suggested masks.

My issue is mainly legal. I'm good at pretending I just "got curious" and "wandered in to take a quick picture and leave". I've been caught twice now and the excuse has worked fine. But if I'm all decked out with a mask, I'm obviously not just someone who wandered in by mistake.

it's darker later than it was at first

In 99% of abandoned buildings masks are not important. Don't worry about it.

Make sure you know how to use the respirator correctly.

There is a big thread on masks/respirators and not only do they NOT fully test them, they way someone said they test them is wrong. If you're not doing the tent/smoke test, you're NOT really testing your setup.

I'm sure some will argue, but that's fine. And yes you are better off with it, and you just might be fine how you're wearing it.... In any event, it's their lungs not mine.

I never wear a mask, my high school is full of asbestos.

I actually touched a ceiling pannel and hand it fall in my face...not fun.

I'm probably gonna get cancer because of it, so a little asbestos here and there while UEing isn't gonna making me more dead so I don't care.

The thread basegrinder is referring to is actually packed with OTHER good information, and can be found HERE:

Base, you do realize there are other OSHA approved methods BESIDES the tent/smoke test, to test respirators. Don't you??

I had mentioned where we used a hood and that thing that puffs the really noxious smelling chemical (which is perfectly safe). It's immediately obvious if your mask isn't sealing properly. And it's not "smoke".

There is also a lot of excellent discussion on that thread about finding the proper TYPE of filter for your respirator.

I think after everyone posts their opinion about something, they should post their certs at the bottom to back it up. Except it would probably be annoying, because even people with certs have opinions about things, and they aren't always right all the time. Or they forget things. Or they act elitist but don't post enough actual information or agree with other information to actually let their post make a difference or be usefull to anyone else. Hmm...

I'm kinda new to this, but any time I've gone exploring, I've never even thought of getting a breathing mask (respirator, whatever you want to call it)

How important are they? Can I get away with just a face mask like they wear in hospitals, to prevent airborn particles, or should I get a filtered mask?

I find them annoying myself (I have a half face one for painting). They are annoying but if you go into any older buildings where theres asbestos or heavy mold, wear it! Your lungs will thank you later.

Dont be an idiot & have it on display, keep it in your sack until you get to your P.O.E. Do us all a favor and be subtle with any gear that screams IM GOING IN!

You can pretty much only get away with wearing it in public and getting people to ignore you if you're Asian.

Asians have been walking around in public with face masks on for so long that it's almost a generally accepted thing to see.

I think everyone should be able to do that, without raising any suspicion. They way that people can in, say...Somalia. Or Pakistan.

I still have a feeling that if I walked into my bank with a half-mask on, that people would flip out though.

Well, how important is breathing?

By doing some research on the location, or by judging the architecture you can tell what year the building was erected and what contaminants may lay inside. For instance asbestos has been banned since 1978, but buildings built 30-40 years prior could still be using it for insulation.

Heavy dust particles hinder breathing, really bad if they used lead based paint that has now become airborne. I'm not super paranoid, but I always at least carry a few disposable particle dust mask in my go bag.

Dating building can work, just keep in mind lead paint is still out there today. Buildings with weathered interiors, ceiling tiles, even busted up grout, can damage your lungs. Adhesives that dry out over time, concrete dust being stirred up, normal dust containing god knows what, mold, feces, fungus. If you don't think wearing a mask is cool, go for it. I like being able to breath before, during, and after an explore without issue.

Half masks are cheap, filters are cheap. Medical bills are not.
