Lowerpro makes some durable bags, I've had a slingshot style one that's gone through hell and back.

Guns are only a good idea if you're exploring Svalbard or somewhere with a bunch of polar bears

As for guns?
That's a whole other matter.
You cannot go wrong with a Glock G23 or G19, nor can you err with a S&W J Frame, something like a 642.
PM me before you hit the gun shop, I am a firearms instructor.

I think a Glock and a S&W is two different worlds in firearms.

Ok, I have seen so much dumb, and so much good comments on here. I trained women for a while and there a 3 billion myths with women and guns, from use only revolvers to they can't handle X caliber so they should only be sold Y caliber. I will break some of the dumb down for you.

Pistol tips

First firearms.... Get what you want, buy quality, and in general most handguns are quality. Here are some rules about handguns you should follow.

1. No gun in unjamable, or nearly unjamable. I have watched bodybuilders limp wrist handguns into malfunctions, revolvers grit lock, and tons more. Most modern guns (Post 1911 family) are pretty durable and work even with weak wrists, its how clean the weapon is that makes up most of the malfunction issues.

2. Gun culture is more black cats, and walking under ladders info then anything else. Don't trust a damn thing a gun owner says, and don't let someone tell you you can't shoot XYZ caliber. The vast majority of people bought a gun because it was "made in aMerica" so that means quality (BS), buddy has one, ______ military/LE organization carried them. I can't tell you how many PD's and Military orgs have picked dumb weapons/calibers and had to rebuy a few years later.

3. If anyone starts debating the merits of the 9mm vs(anything inbetween) the 45 turn your brain off, because whatever they spout out hasn't been researched, they read something off the internet, or heard it from a buddy. The only thing you need to know about calibers is....
A. Use the caliber you like, and is most affordable to you.
B. Make sure the gun you choose doesn't have issues or manufacturing issues in chosen caliber (Glock has had notorious breaking issues with the 40 family, but great in the 9mm)
C. The only thing that does any damage with pistol calibers is shot placement, and there is no difference in temporary wound cavity to make any difference.

I can back this all up by documented research from educated individuals who work in the industry now. If you need the info to feel better I'll give it to you, but it isn't really something I want to type out now.

Carry concerns

I have carried all over the place, and frankly I knew the risks, legal and otherwise. People can call you a fool, but firearms to me are nothing more then the last line of defense. It doesn't come out until I truely need it, and if people think I am a fool or whatever I don't care. Very few times will you not find me with a firearm, that is my choice. If your life is worth more to you then, the outside chance of you going to jail (if you are smart and lucky) then carry. Don't listen to bone heads on this site about stuff they don't understand. It is a personal decision for you and no one else.

Bag Carry

I think the people who talked to you about the bags had some great ideas. Personally I run every day with a tactical tailor backpack with water, wallet etc, and a firearm. Not the fastest access but its more of a anti dog thing where I run then anything, and they usually make themselves aware. Regardless when transporting anything fragile in that pack, I have just sub-bagged things Camera in padded case in bag. Seems to work the best which leaves you open to carrying any bag.

I don't recommend Hazard 4 or 5.11 as they both single stitch bags some places and I am not a fan of blowouts. Maxpedition is ok, but I spend the few extra pennies and get a good pack from someone like greyghost, but honestly it doesn't matter. I use my bags for years and generally get a new one when I have a bunch of cash. My old bags go to friends because I buy quality stuff.

I know military gear, nad less camera protection so defiantly listen to the experts on good camera protection.... The rest of the hog wash.... yeah. If you grab a few guns like the feel of a couple, and want to know more about them PM me, I have a big resrouce for recall information etc so hit me up before you buy, and I'll try to help you out.

May have been said already,
1 go to a range or gunshow, find a gun that fits your hand well in the caliber you are most comfortable with.
2 learn everything you can about that gun, know it inside and out, how to clean disassemble put back together, etc.
3 shoot it, alot, shoot it unitl you are absolutely comfortable with it and then shoot it some more.

No 1 gun is perfect for everyone, it's best to find the best one for you.

(Glock has had notorious breaking issues with the 40 family, but great in the 9mm)

Glocknade?

Wish I knew more about bags, sadly I can't be of much advice on that front.

Cracked frames due to a lack of metal on the rear rail, unsported chamber issues, and now the Gen 4 with the recoil springs binding up that I still can't understand.

I own two G22's cheap purchases had them for training people, and carried one for a while, and while durable, and reliable, they aren't anything special in my opinion, they seem to have come into popularity more for the similarities in grip angles with a revolver and price. However this is a exploring thread and not a gun debate. We can PM about it if you want. Still decent guns but I stay away from the 40 and 45 cal with them due to the recalls over the years.

I bought the Amazon Basics backpack. Its identical to the Canon backpack but 1/2 the price. It fits my camera with battery grip, telephoto lens, remote shutters, hotshoe flash, mini tripod and lots of extra batteries and other stuff in the pockets. It has a place for a tripod on the side too. Its very padded and has lasted well so far in all my adventures. I would recommend it any day.

As for guns or any weapons, read your local trespassing laws or other weapons laws in your area before even considering this. What may be a light trespassing warning can easily turn into all kinds of weapons or criminal charges. When we Urbex in FL, we leave our CCW's in the vehicles. No knives, tools or anything. just camera and lighting gear.

As for a good gun, I HIGHLY recommend a Bersa Thunder 380, or my absolute favorite, its larger brother, the Bersa Thunder 9mm Pro Compact. Most accurate gun I've ever owned or shot and best trigger pull of anything I've ever shot. The 380 version is the same size as the Walther PPK, but much better designed and VERY affordable (under $300 new at most gun shows in FL here).

You'd be better going to a reputable firearms dealer in your area and feeling out what handguns fit well with you (weight, grip size, power to your comfort level, etc.), rather than talking to people on the internet.

I'm not sure I have the energy to read this entire thread, but what Shotgun Mario said here is the best advice on the "gun" part.

This has come up on the forum before. Someone says "what gun should I get?"

And people throw out a shitload of answers, based mostly on personal preference.

YOU have to find out what your preference is. There are lots of ranges out there that will "rent" you a gun and let you shoot it. Go shoot a bunch of them. Find what's comfortable for you, that you can shoot accurately with. Try different manufacturers and different calibers.

The gun that is comfy and accurate in your hands, is the best choice for you. Not what everyone on the internet says their favorite choice is.

THAT HAVING BEEN SAID....

I have a Bersa Thunder .380 that I'm pretty fond of as a concealed carry weapon, but I've also carried 9mm, .40, & .45.

If a gun is too heavy or bulky, you'll likely tend to find yourself wanting to carry it less and less and it'll sit home more and more.

Everyone talks shit about .380 and 9mm, but no one likes getting shot by them.

As far as the legal/ethical side of carrying a firearm, that's only a decision YOU can make. Get informed on what exactly the penalties are that you'd be facing, or if you can get a CCW in your state. Be as informed as you can, and make your own decisions about what you do.

I carry often when out mine exploring. Everyone just LOVES to say what a bad idea it is to carry a gun, but you're not them; so you do what you want. They have no idea where you're going to be or what you're going to be doing.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

Like a few others here, I also own various firearms. My mom's gun of choice was the 1911 .45 so I figured a woman can shoot any weapon she wants to. Some really good information on this thread. I think you can tell which posts they are...

I started out with a 9mm, not because it was the "best" (whatever "best" is) but because ammunition was plentiful and reasonably priced. I enjoy shooting so ammunition cost was a factor in my decision. I have a couple of magazines loaded with self defense rounds when I'm using it for protection and shoot target loads through it the rest of the time.

Like Therrin I spend a lot of time out in the desert visiting old mining sites, often by myself. My personal decision is to be armed and carry in a holster. Funny thing about folks out "in the sticks". You step out of your vehicle with a sidearm and they are more likely to ask you how you like that particular model than they are to freak out.

If you are seriously thinking about purchasing a gun, here's my recommendation:

- Talk to reputable gun dealer
- See if you can rent the same make and model, and try it out under the range master's supervision
- Purchase the weapon of your choice
- Take a safety course
- Range time
- Range time
- More range time
- Concealed carry class if you choose
- Range time

That's my 2 centavos worth. My opinion is worth what you paid for it.

Oddly enough, that's the exact reason I don't carry my Bersa Thunder 9mm as much...its a double stack, and bulkier than a single stack handgun. I briefly had a Ruger LC9 which felt GREAT to carry, but I hated the trigger pull on it, and sold it back. I'm now back to carrying the bulkier Thunder 9. I'll be getting the Thunder 380 one of these days. Love that gun!

It's funny you mention how people hate to get shot by a smaller caliber, as I occasionally carry my Walther P22 around. People ask how on earth I am going to stop someone with a .22... but I also tell them it's got 14 rounds in it and after getting hit by it a few times, that person is more likely to run away or give up than to keep getting shot. It's not going to stop a cokehead or a grizzly...but chances of meeting them are slim in my areas LOL.

Yeah, of all the people I know who bitch about .380, I still haven't found one yet who'll stand up and take a bullet from one. Strange....

It kinda reminds me of the Noisy Cricket from Men In Black. But the Ruger LCP is probably more-so.

I've had the Bersa Thunder .380 for about 7 years now. It's a very comfortable gun to carry. I used to carry my HK USP 40 for years before that, and a Beretta 92F before that.

The Bersa can also be "locked out" using a small tool-key on my keychain. Not that *I* have a use for that, but I guess if you have kids around or something then it's handy. This little key thingie fits in the side of the frame and locks down the entire gun.

I wouldn't want to have to use it past about 5 yards though. Pretty short sight radius.

Also has the decocking lever / safety that's ambidexterous on the rear of the slide.

I wouldn't mind having one in a 9mm. Might have to look for one. I've been looking at buying a friend's STAR 9mm, but that thing is all machined out of steel; pretty heavy.

I'd be tempted to disagree with this general philosophy.

And there is no reason that a person SHOULDN'T be able to clean and maintain their firearm. It's not like he's running through the mountains in A-stan being chased by nyuks and the taliban.

Engendering the basic idea that "if you have a revolver you never need to take care of it" is a great way to completely mistrain someone's mental outlook on firearms.

Your statement leaves out so much other information as to be absolutely ridiculous.

"pistols are roughly equal in their stopping power". Fail statement. Perhaps if you said "a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol of comparable calibers are roughly equal in their stopping power".

If you're gonna stand around with your head in the sand, find a different topic to do it with than firearms.

No thanks I'm good, I don't feel the need to masturbate this topic to death on another part of the forum.

This already pops up like every other month as it is.

Some of you assholes I wouldn't want to be ANYWHERE NEAR if you were carrying, because you sound like more of a hazard to the innocent people around you.

Geez I forgot what thread it was, anyone remember that one douchebag who thought he was gonna buy whatever gun the internet told him to buy, and he wasn't gonna practice with it at all, just carry it around so he could jerk out dat smokepole when someone needed killin' ?

And then there's all the folks who suggest that no one in UE needs to carry a gun, who think that all explore locations are the exact same as the places THEY go, so they don't see why it would be needed for ANYONE, ANYWHERE.

This topic is like a broken record.

Therrin you and DevilC are picking nits. The reality is the common family of 380-45 are basically doing the same crush and temporary wound cavity (which is basically no temporary wound cavity). The reality is I bet both of you would probably agree more then you realize.

As for the revolver thing. I am not a revolver person, some women feel more comfortable with them, and they are mildly safer in a untrained hand, when it's in a purse. Shooting it is another story and I am more of a semi auto fan.

I'd like to know what the OPer decides to do.
