DSLR and UE-Friendly Backpacks.. and GUNS, YO!

I've been in search of a backpack that will fit my DSLR AND all of my gear comfortably. I want something about the size of a Camelback, but with crazy protection for the camera. Hell, if you know of a Camelback-grade backpack with DSLR protection that isn't $150, that would be amazing.

Any ideas? What do you use to keep everything together?

While I'm here, I'm not exactly a scary-looking girl, and having cash on me may have gotten me out of some bad scenarios before, but as I get more serious about UE, I want more protection. Any advice for a small and light hand-gun? I'm not going to be packing while draining, but there are some places that I want to go in the city that I know I have a higher chance of encountering some shady people that may not want my money, ya know? I've also been taking people exploring with me, and I don't want anyone hurt on my watch. Justifying a firearm is hard. :/ Hell, any effective alternatives?

A tazer or pepper spray would be a better alternative ,unless you plan on using rubber rounds.

You'd be better going to a reputable firearms dealer in your area and feeling out what handguns fit well with you (weight, grip size, power to your comfort level, etc.), rather than talking to people on the internet.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

I love guns, I really do.

But carrying a firearm while committing minor crimes just isn't a good idea.

Do what you will, but I would suggest some good pepper spray and a companion. You can always pick up a brick, some rebar, or a steel pipe on the spot in an abandonment.

That backpack may be perfect! I'll do more research on the Px4. Thank you so much!

I doubt that I'd be taking it with me to major areas, and I've gotten away with A LOT with my excuses (or dumb luck) such that I've never even been searched. We have a lot of out-of-the-way locations to explore, and pumas like to roam around as do some more interesting characters. Really, I'm more worried about the animals than the people, but I want to be prepared. I'll be more aware of loose weapons, thank you!

I've spoken with a few dealers, but I wasn't sure if I was missing some UE-specific information that you guys may have revealed. I've learned a lot of surprising things from you guys that I hadn't even considered. You're right; I've slowly come to realize that things like firearms and cameras need to have a correct "feel" to them. Thanks, Mario. ^.^

When it comes to firearms, it really is all dependent on you. Do you plan on keeping it on you in these places or only some? Being in AZ, a lot of the places I go are typically rural or wooded and in that case, I'll keep a handgun with me. Anyplace that I have a tangible chance of running into any people, I tend not to. It can be a pain to explain it away. If I'm going to explore in town, I just leave the gun and keep a utility knife. It's unassuming and useful for more than just shooting. OH! The handgun I have is a Walther P99 compact. I've had it awhile and I like it. Would recommend. The Beretta is okay too, I'm sure; just haven't owned one in a long time. -_-

Camelpaks already cost $140, so I am not sure if there is something cheaper out there.

Also, I forgot. Bags! Just like everything else, kind of situational. In town, I'm closer to things, so don't need as much gear. I have a bag from incase and is decent for those short outings and handles being roughed up okay. That one was not really cheap though, but holds what I need and keeps everything pretty safe. Outside the city, I still use a big ACU rucksack with a Camelback and internal frame. those trips are longer and I don't need to be inconspicuous. I tend to over think it though, probably. I'm longwinded today, Sorry, guys. Haha.

So I forgot the gun part, but if you need a gun you should look into the Glock 27 .40S&W

The .40S&W with hollow point is the right ammo to stop most people that might attack you and is a common ammo type that is used by law enforcement all over the country.

The Glock 27 is a compact gun, so it's ideal to carry it concealed if you have the permit for it.

I've heard awesome things about Glocks, especially that they last forever and are almost impossible to jam, which is awesome, 'cause I would PREFER that the gun not jam when I'm trying to save my life, ya know? I'll look into those a bit harder. Thank you so much!

I have a small Camelback that I take mostly everywhere, but a larger, padded bag would be awesome for full-day adventures, especially if I know I'm going to need a lot of gear.

I'm like you; I don't want to carry a firearm with me in urban areas, necessarily. If I am too afraid to go in without a firearm, I replace the gun with people, preferably big, bear-looking men. I'll check out the Walther, thank you! Berettas I've heard mixed things about. I think the Glock confirmation may be the winner, but I'll check out the Walther! Thanks again!

Colo may be different, but here in NJ if the cops bust you they will always search your pack for drugs etc. If they find a handgun on your person while committing the misdemeanor of criminal trespass, you can count on them escalating that to a felony and instead of a ticket you'll find yourself in the county slammer awaiting court date and bail.

So before you pack heat on your UE trip, know the laws in your area in regards to trespassing with a firearm.

Well said! That's why I only carry on the rural trips. At least out there, I'm free and clear for the most part. Arizona has pretty awesome gun laws, but you still don't want to go to jail as a "violent" criminal. Animals tend to be more dangerous than people here.

Someone tested it and he shot about 2000 rounds without cleaning it and said he had no problems with it at all.

unless you're exploring in polar or grizzly bear country, you have absolutely nothing to fear, especially from Pumas (I'm guessing you mean a cougar or mountain lion). Cougars are INCREDIBLY rare, with less than 100 confirmed attacks on humans in the past 100years. You're quite literally thousands of times more likely to be struck and killed by lightning than by a cougar.

By and large I think the threat of being attacked by any animal is hugely overstated by the media. I've spent months camping in heavy bear country and hardly ever saw any. The few times we did run into bears they were always running away. As others have already said, if you're worried about animals you're better off investing in some bear spray and bear bangers. Mace is probably also better for personal defense too....if you're going to pull a gun on somebody, especially a violent criminal, you better be 100% prepared to kill them with it, and fully expect them to fight back with all they've got.
Just my $0.02

As for bags....definitely look into the Burton Zoom or Crumpler Whickey & Cox. I've got 2 of each and absolutely love them both.

5.11 is prob the cheapest and best made gear of the type you're asking for:
http://www.lapolic...h-12-backpack.html
Greyghost gear is also VERY affordable:
http://www.greygho...pack-litelok-black
Hazard4 makes awesome combo gear and the best combat photog bags:
http://www.lapolic...civilian-labs.html
But it's expensive.
Maxpedition gear is quite solid, but also expensive:
http://www.lapolic...-series-packs.html

As for guns?
That's a whole other matter.
You cannot go wrong with a Glock G23 or G19, nor can you err with a S&W J Frame, something like a 642.
PM me before you hit the gun shop, I am a firearms instructor.

I dont normally carry firearms when im exploring but if im in rural areas i always carry something to protect myself. My recommendation is a .45 since i have one myself (colt M1911).

For the bag i would go to your friendly neighborhood outdoors store and try all of them to see wich one fills out your requirement best.

I'm really liking my Lowepro Fastpack 250 ($70). Easy to grab the camera out without having to take the pack all the way off. Separate camera equip compartment and roomy top for other gear. Lots of compartments for organizing too.
http://www.amazon...._i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought a packable Mountainsmith rain cover for it that fits perfectly and always stays in the bag: http://www.amazon...._i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have an in-waste-band kydex holster for the Springfield. It only shows if I want it to.
