| | | How Important Are Breathing Masks? < on 4/26/2013 8:04 PM >
| | | I'm kinda new to this, but any time I've gone exploring, I've never even thought of getting a breathing mask (respirator, whatever you want to call it) How important are they? Can I get away with just a face mask like they wear in hospitals, to prevent airborn particles, or should I get a filtered mask?

Depends what you encounter in the environment you're in. There is no "one mask takes on all situations" solution. In MOST of the mines I explore, I use an N95 mask. In some of them I use a half-mask with appropriate cartridges, due to other elements which are present in those locations, like asbestos or large amounts of lead, or cinnabar. Some buildings have lots of asbestos that you'd be walking through. You may not even know what the true hazards are. If you're worried about it I'd suggest at *least* an N95 mask, unless you have reasons to believe more of a hazard may exist, then go for a half-mask which appropriate filters.
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |

| | | If you're going to be in buildings with lots of mold and asbestos its best to wear a respirator. If you get a respirator make sure to get one for mold and asbestos (usually about $20-30) and get filters that say P100 (about $8-10). Also, read this: http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=104366

QFT. I can't stand when I see people wearing these, as though it's really doing anything for them. Those are splatter guards, they don't do jack for filtration. Also, that link is an amazing story. I'm going to forward that to a few people. [last edit 4/26/2013 10:47 PM by Therrin - edited 1 times]

Hahaha, no, Ontario (if it was NJ, I'd probably be wearing one all the time XD)
Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll be picking up a mold/asbestos mask before doing too much more exploring

Have you ever noticed what is in NJ? There are explorers coming in from out of state for your Hospitals, Institutions, Psych Wards, Mental Centers, etc...

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark. |

| | | In my perspective, it is definitely something that you should carefully consider. From everything I've read, if your lungs are hurting afterwards (sore, coughing, etc) then you are doing damage to yourself that will likely outlast the short term. Plus, who really wants to be that person at work or school who can't stop coughing?!

| | | If, after an exploration, you're coughing, get a mask. If you're wearing a mask and are coughing after an exploration, get a better one. I know I'm going to have to invest in a good mask if I want to continue. I'm prone to Bronchitis, and this is my third exploration where I've come back coughing up a lung. Even though, after the first one, I invested in a mask. (A semi-cheap particle mask.)

when you say you "invented one", do you mean wrapping some fabric over your face?
