Few gear questions? (GPS/GLOVES)

What gloves do you all use that are relatively good priced. Also do you all know of a good GPS that goes for around 100$ or 110$ used? I've seen a few but not 100% sure on one. There was the Magellan Triton 500 I thought looked interesting. I mainly want one to keep track of buildings and areas I find interesting. I don't own a smart phone so that's out of the question.

ive been using these gloves from caterpillar, the palms are coated in a thick latex that is really strong and pretty cut resistant too, they are like $5 at most gas stations.

There are two PC based tools that I use in conjunction with my old Garmin, GPS Babbel and EasyGPS. Both of these let you create waypoints and destinations on your PC, then download them into your hand held.

This ability is great if you have access to a large database of sites and only want to download a specific geographic area. In my use, I have access to a database of thousands of mines in Nevada. I don't want to download the entire database into my unit (don't know if it would have enough memory anyway). I only want the specific area that I am planning to visit. GPSBabel allows me to enter a set of waypoints that define a polygon and it will pass through the database selecting all points that lie within the polygon. Only that subset of waypoints is downloaded to my GPS

These types of tools are the reason that I wish the UE database had lat/lon coordinates, or a downloadable file containing the location description and coordinates. That said, Google Earth is your friend since it displays lat/lon. I can't tell you how many hours I have used Google Earth searching southern Nevada looking for mine tailing piles that aren't already in the big database. I also look at the photos that people have uploaded to Google in the areas that I am interested in. Sometimes those photos will provide additional information about a specific spot.

Sometime back Therrin was discussing methods of researching possible locations. This is one more technique to add to your tool bag.

I would go for some form of mechanics gloves. Most of them are cheap, durable, cut and heat resistant. Most military people have a modified version of them, but in reality its more of a choice on your own. Also if you have a smart phone you really don't need a Garmin, but that would be the way to go if you don't. I have pricey gloves but I like my hands and have other hobbies that require good gloves.

Thanks for all the great advice you all. I ended up getting the Garmin Dakota 200 (Entry level Dakota) and started downloading some detailed topographical maps from GPSfileDEPOT. Love the intuitive layout of the Dakota not to mention touch screen and water proofing.

As far as the gloves go the work gloves you all mentioned seem reasonable, I was looking at some Hex armor gloves but they are crazy expensive (I'm sure they're nice though)....

rather than work gloves i tend to use fingerless bike gloves. they give my hands enough protection while still allowing to to climb on most anything.

I keep two types of gloves.
1.A pair of work gloves
http://www.homedep...72747#.USRsk2dJV2I

These are great: cheap, strong, and good flexibility (as in I can still use my camera fairly well and climb). They didnt make my hands sweat when it was hot out and they kept them from getting frostbitten as of recent. And they come in different sizes.

2. Biking/weightlifting gloves (fingerless)
http://www.dickssp...n=Brand&cp=2460170

I've had these ones for about 2 years now and they are holding up great. I wear these when I find my other pair constricting or I'm taking photos.
Mine are for women so they are smaller sized but they make them in men's sizes as well.

I use my phone for gps. As for gloves, I went to walmart and looked around and settled on weightlifting/biking fingerless gloves. They work when you aren't in areas where you are prone to get cut. If you are careful you can climb on almost anything with them and they keep your palms from being scratched up, and your fingers can probably handle any wear and tear anyway that happen to them.

I just use the $5 mechanic's gloves they sell at Harbor Freight. I probably own close to 10 pairs. I just keep them in different spots. I have a pair in my camera bag, then a few pairs in each of my cars so i always have a pair handy.

I dont even own a GPS. I just use a few things like google, and write down the info i need when going somewhere new.

I use mizuno batting gloves, a powerful flashlight ( the smaller the better) and a knife with a screwdriver on it. Oh and a fire extinguisher pull pin.

I LOVE the Petzl Cordex Gloves. They are pretty expensive but I use them for everything until they fall apart (a very long time later) and then buy another pair.

I've used a GPS (Garmin eTrex) in the past, but found that it's not as useful as you might think. It's not particularly accurate, doesn't work underground at all, and doesn't work in most buildings; I found myself using it less and less.

You'd be better off with a smartphone and Google Maps, if you even need that.

I use these, because they are flippin' cheap! And good to give to someone if they forget a pair.

http://www.homedep...49720#.UVjucKvFStg

I want to get a pair of these

When it comes to a GPS, I am in So Cal, so I have basically no need for a GPS at all. If anything, my iPhone 3GS (which doesn't have service), has a compass.

I have a garmin venture extrex HC. I bought it about 3 years ago for 130$, they are probably cheaper now. I use it for geocaching and marking trails. It is accurate I would say within about 5-10 feet. It performs just as good as the day I got it.
