| | Winter Gear? < on 1/19/2013 7:42 PM >
| | | Not sure if I'm allowed to post this here, but I wanna create the most badass/warm/durable winter gear setup ever for hiking and exploring and would rather ask people than just look at reviews online. It's cold up here in Canadia and I'm sick of being house-ridden all winter.
Stuff I need: - Ridiculously warm, lightweight and durable mid-layer - Warm, lightweight and durable outer-layer - Durable winter boots that won't get salt stained, wet or deteriorate - A good pair of cheap crampons
Currently thinking of going Arcteryx for the jacket, but not sure which one to buy. I have no idea whats brands would be good for the other gear. Suggestions?

| | | look into carhartt for the jacket they are warm and extremely durable and for the mid layer i just wear a hoodie. as for boots i have a pair of belleville 700's they are waterproof and they make insulated versions for extreme cold.

| | | Carhartt insulated coveralls, you'll never go cold, some thick boot socks and 8" boots, a nice thick jacket like a quilted Schidmt or sherpa lined Carhartt are perfect. Other jacket options if you have a surplus store nearby or are willing to order online are the U.S. military ECWCS parkas, and US Naval Pea coats ( a little heavier than you may like but one of the warmest coats i've ever had).

| | | Around here, we use the three W's: wool, waterproof and windproof. It's good to have more layers so that you can easily adjust your clothing according to the temperature as well as your activity. It's of no use to have "just" warm clothing - you'll get sweaty. Merino wool is best for under/middle layers. Technical underwear comes second. Avoid cotton at all cost, so no T-shirts or shit like that. The outermost layer may be Gore-Sex or equivalent, but remember that it's basically just a plastic bag you pull over your body. If you want to go cheap, look into military surplus stores. I bought some second-hand British navy wool shirts for like $10 apiece. I also have both the ECWCS parka as well as the US Navy Pea Coat, and I wouldn't recommend either of them for hiking. The latter is nice to have when you walk around in town, but not out in the field.

| | | Having recently been working outdoors in cold weather I've found that the Carhartt clothing is excellent for working in. Most of it is pretty heavy though, and I'm not sure I'd want to go hiking in it. I've got two different jackets, pants, a beanie with earflaps & mouth/nose covering that can be stuffed up inside, & gloves. All by Carhartt. Also have their socks, and several different kinds of Cabella's socks; and Danner boots.
Again, the Carhartt stuff is usually pretty heavy. I suppose to some degree it depends what kinda look you're going for, what colors you want, the weight you don't mind carrying, and what you're looking to spend. Also been wearing Columbia thermals, PolarMax thermals, and UnderArmor thermals. I'm pretty sure at this point that I prefer the UnderArmor thermals above all the others; and they make different levels of base layers. If you want REALLY FUCKING WARM baselayer thermals, Cabella's has some that blow almost everything else out of the water, but they're over $100 for just the thermal bottom layer and are somewhat heavy. Depends what kinda conditions you're going into.

That is an addition of zero information to this thread. You didn't even say what kind of socks they were or who made them. Thanks for nothing RM!
On the topic of sox... I had gotten a ton of new socks this last year that I briefly mentioned in my last post. Most all of them are boot socks, and are mostly wool-blends of one kind or another. There is one pair I got from Cabella's that are the warmest damn socks I have EVER worn. Can't find them on the website, I'll have to take pix. All of the above still allow my feet to sweat though, even when it's near 0*F outside, and once that happens my boots/feet freeze into solid blocks of Therrin-footed-ice-blocks. I have not been able to come up with a solution to this. I looked into those shoe/boot sole warmers that have built in LiPo batteries and are supposed to "warm" your feet. Never got a pair. There were soooo many Awesome or Terrible reviews. Not much middle ground. Anyone tried them yet?
