Hi all,

Just an update. I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get my site online. I've repatriated from England to Australia now, which took a ferocious toll on my time, and have begun writing it properly again. I also have a very basic place holder site online at www.chernobylholiday.com waiting for the full thing to be finished.

I've had somebody design a very nice looking page for me which will be unveiled at the same time as everything else, and I'm really, honestly hoping to have it live by Monday next week at the latest (don't shoot me if I don't)

I'll let you know when it's ready.

Hi Pulse,

First post. New guy here.

Hey, me and a buddy from work are thinking about taking the Chernobyl tour. I already have the info from Sam travel. BIG price difference for airline tickets during the winter and spring months. I think we are going in May '05. I am from Connecticut, USA

ONLY If you have time, can you answer some questions I have? I have no experience in traveling abroad.

1.) I read NOT to drink tap water in the Ukraine. Drink bottled water only?

2.)After you finished the Chernobyl tour @ 6:00pm , did you hop on a plane or stay another night in Kiev?

3.) Which Hotel did you stay at? (I have the SAM list)

4.) Did you feel the need, or was told to take a shower after the tour?

5.) Did you use Iodide Pills to protect your Thyroid?

Thanks Tony!

I just saw this on CNN.com today, looks interesting.....
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/10/film.zombie.reut/index.html

The movie Return of the Living Dead 4 is going to be shot at chernobyl. Its a cool location to shoot a movie, but I would be worried about the radiation exposure they will be exposed to. Chances are it will take at least a month of shooting.

I recently got an e-mail from a Dutch guy who claims he is a photographer and wnats to come with me on one of my expeditions. It's his dream to get a tour in Chernobyl...not really my kind of vacation.

Iodine pills won't do a damn thing to protect your thyroid because 18 years after the disaster, there's nothing it needs protection from. The radioactive iodine decayed away in the first three months or so.

Totally agree it's clean now. Toronto and any big city has the same amout of radiation. But somehow everyone forgot about it.

I wouldn't go that far. Most places in the Chernobyl zone are at at least several times the background radiation levels in a city like Toronto. And many places are hundreds and thousands of times normal background -- even today. There may not be any radio-iodine left, which increases the risk of thyroid cancer in children (though not necessarily in adults), but there is still plenty of radioactive cesium, strontium, plutonium, americium etc.

The risks should be judged soberly, without exaggeration or underestimation.

No joke. Drive through there and at least half looks abandoned, while most of the rest looks like it should be...

Hoax allert. Elena not ride motorcycle. I was in Cheronbyl on turist trip as she. My guide say, he showed Elena Chenobyl and not ride motorcycle. He sayd, Elena was with husband crual, kicking toys in kindergarten and don't expose the radiation. My guide was good guy and I given him money because I know it hard to be with radiation and small salary and such liars as Elena want make fame.

It's such an evocative location and tour that it seems a bit vain to be nitpicking about whether she was part of a tourist group or not. It doesn't make it any less valid, other than that she (may have, according to internet sources, home of 24-carat truth) lied about it.
