| | Not Another Gear Thread < on 11/24/2012 4:11 AM >
| | | Hopefully not another boring gear thread...what unique items do you wear / carry? I wear volleyball knee pads underneath my pants to protect and keep my already injured knees from taking more damage. Just the slightest bump will send my right knee cap on a 90 degree turn to the side, out of socket, which puts me on the sideline for over a month. These babies give me all kinds of impact protection, while also giving me support while walking.

| | | Not sure how unique this is, but I bring binoculars with me when I'm going someplace risky. I've used em to scout out an entrance, and once, when trapped inside, to figure out what the people who had seen us were doing. Oh, and one of these: Cause why not.

Yeah, that's not so unique. I have the exact same thing in my camera bag.

| | | I made this for one of our more interesting projects when I couldn't find an off-the-shelf version long enough for our needs. But my version turned out to be compact-able to around the volume of a soda can, so it has earned a place in my pack along with a couple of slings, daisies and 'biners, all of which come in quite handy.

That is pretty slick. I have a rope that was used for a small boat anchor. 2 overhand knots on top of each other every 1-2 feet make for an easy climb. Not so much for the person who has to get that rope to the top of what you want to climb.

This one is too easy. Wait till you have about 1/3 or less of the tp on the roll...and then flatten it. Take 2+ hand sanitizer wipes, and put it in the middle of the tp roll. Place contents in a sandwich type bag. edit: words [last edit 11/25/2012 5:20 AM by WalkingFumble - edited 1 times]

As Steed said, I'm sure it isn't unique. However, it is an item seldom mentioned on the forum. And if you need it and don't have it, you will really wish you had remembered it! Besides the intended use, it substitutes for facial tissue and fire kindling. I use the more heavy duty "freezer" bags. I also seldom see people mention carrying water. Perhaps it is just a given, but you really need a water bottle, canteen or camelback full of clean drinking water.

| | | I carry a roll (and like already suggested, I pull it off the rack when it's about half-used. There is also always a pocket packet of tissues or two with me. As far as water goes, I can only think of a couple sites that were more than a five-minute walk from the nearest fully stocked convenience store, so carrying water isn't a concern for me. But I also know that's just because of where I live.

Knots, and practice climbing these sumbitches. For a great laugh, hang one off a yard tree where it can spin freely. Take a shot each time you make it up or fall.

| | | We frequently carry a good load of gear when we head into a mine to do some vertical exploration. That said, it's pretty much mainstream descending and ascending gear. Although I don't have one, the only piece of unique gear that I have ever seen on an explore was a 4-gas meter. They are pretty expensive to buy, and as I understand it need to be calibrated every couple of years. I sure wouldn't mind having one if the budget allowed. I am planning to purchase a SPOT satellite tracker for when I head out solo exploring. I guess that might be a piece of "unique" gear from a UE perspective. Abby Normal

Drink the entire bottle if you manage to climb it and do neither.

So the rescue team can actually locate her in a couple of hours instead of two days.

The guys pretty well covered it. The SPOT could be considered a personal version of an aircraft transponder. Friends and family can watch your location via the internet. I live in the desert southwest where we have vast tracts of undeveloped land. When I head out exploring I have a general area in mind but by the end of the day could end up 50 or more miles away from my original target. Some of these trails only get a few people down them per year. Although its becoming less frequent, it's not uncommon to travel in areas without cell phone coverage. My thinking behind the SPOT is twofold, becoming stranded due to mechanical failure (certainly couldn't be poor driving), or getting injured while inside of a mine. In addition to the tracking feature, the SPOT has an emergency function that will trigger EMS response. The emergency function would be good if something happens above ground. In the event of becoming injured underground, EMS could identify my last known location using the tracking feature and start from there. Either way it greatly reduces the search area and hopefully would speed assistance. Hope that all makes sense. Abby Normal

I guess if I REALLY valued my life I wouldn't go exploring old mines.

You mean "it greatly reduces the search area and hopefully would speed body recovery time". I have concerns that things like this give people a false sense of security and encourage more risky behavior. It is no substitute for having an exploring partner who is already there and can help immediatly. We could find examples of lives that have been saved because of these, but we can also find examples of lives saved because someone was not wearing a seat belt and was "thrown clear" of an auto accident. I think both scenarios are unlikely.

I can see why this would be fun. I love/hate technology toys. They can be fun. They can be a distraction.
