Colonel By Island Recreation Building

While cruising through the Rideau Canal (recognized internationally as one of the oldest and best-preserved operating canals in the world), we stopped at an island called "Colonel By Island", named after Colonel John By, who carved the Rideau Canal out of the wilderness in the early 19th century.

On this island there is what looks like a recreational building, now boarded up.

There was a broken window so we just crawled in.

The rooms on the left were smaller and had tiles all over from the ceiling.

On the right there was a large room with a fireplace in the middle of it. The floor was really soft and had some holes in it.

Behind the fireplace was a table with a record player and there were envelopes and sheets of paper all over the ground.

All the other rooms were very dark and I was relying on my camera flash to see as we weren't prepared. Here's the kitchen:

Around the corner was a bathroom and a laundry room, when I went to walk into the laundry room I fell through the floor, I cut my leg and pulled a muscle in my arm, not bad. There was a hallway with many rooms but we didn't go in there as it was extremely hard to see. This is really my first time exploring an abandoned place.

Nice work. Thanks for sharing. Don't let falling through the floor stop you from exploring more, but learn from it, gotta stay safe out there.

Awesome find. That's too bad about the fall through the floor, though. Good thing you weren't alone.

Nice find! Falling through a floor is scary. You never know what is beneath you. Always test the floors as good as possible before you freely walk around.

I forgot all about that place. Docked the boat there once many years ago. The place was boarded up back then, only the washrooms were still open for use.
Thanks for the look inside.

The bathrooms are still there, and strangely in really good condition.

Also, thanks guys!

a little Googling...

The present building on the island was built in 1949-50 for Danny Arnstein, the owner of the Yellow Cab Company of Chicago and New Your City. The architect of the building was Horace Roberts of Westport.

The island was originally known as the "Isle of Guernsey"

In the 1940s, the Long Island Club was formed with at least three families involved, including Danny Arnstein (Yellow Cab Company). The front of the building contained four large bedrooms with baths, a very large living room and dining area and a game and sun room. All these rooms were fitted with call buttons to the kitchen. Behind the kitchen was a small sitting area for the servants, their two small bedrooms and shared bathroom. Mr. Arnstein visited the island every summer until his death in 1960 and always brought his cook and maid from New York City. The large central section of the cottage had 14 foot ceilings to match the Arnstein apartment in New York City. It boasted two 18th century chandeliers designed to hold 36 candles each. The stone in the four fireplaces was locally quarried limestone.

After Mr. Arnstein's death in 1960, the island was acquired by Gerry Livingston of Smiths Falls and the island became known as "Livingston Island". It was sold to Parks Canada in 1979 who renamed the island "Colonel By Island".
