Wireless camera...

There is an old abandoned building about 20 minutes out of town from where I live, if I remember correctly, at one point it was used as a hospital to house people with tuberculosis when it was in a massive pandemic state. It was then converted to house those who where... "insane" if you will. Not to long ago, they boarded up nearly every window to the outside, however, there is a broken window on one side and a big metal grate that can be lifted up to gain access to the inside. Recently, There have been big green signs posted stating the area is now under wireless surveillance. It is in a wooded area so the cameras (if there actually are any) could be anywhere. I was thinking of taking a camera at night and seeing if I could see any IR lights through the view finder and figure out where the cameras are located. Are there any other ways to detect wireless cameras, without looking to shady?

It'll buff out.

Sure there is.
Get a scanner and see what is going on there.
Some scanners can actually show you pictures that are transmitted from nearby.

Wireless cameras work only in certain bands so you can check out these bands and see if someone is transmitting anything there.

You also could check if there is a commercial license for this property that they can use a different band for there wireless cameras.

Besides this, a night vision scope works nice to find IR light sources.

Also a camera needs a power sources, so you could see if there are any small power lines. They could run on batteries, but than someone has to go there and chance the batteries, so look for tier tracks. Install a wildlife camera in a tree and see if someone came by when you are not there.
Or the cameras can run of solar power but you would see the panels somewhere in a shadow free area.

So there are a lot of things you can do to look for wireless stuff.

How much would one of these scanners run? I'd be a good tool, but im not even sure they have cameras! Wouldn't the smart thing for them to do be boarding up ALL the windows and perhaps weld the metal grate down? Wireless cameras would cost them a little more than that wouldn't it?

You would probably be better off checking for power at the house since odds are no power = no cameras.

The other possibility is that they have cameras watching the paths that people use to come in. These are probably wildlife cameras with an IR flash and motion trigger. To avoid these, just put on some hiking clothes and walk through the woods to the location rather than on a path.

If the place is really secluded I would doubt that they would have surveillance unless they had either someone living there, someone checking on the property that can download the cameras, or had power turned on at the location.

Video survelance often use IR illuminators at night, and depending on ambient light you should be able to see a fuzzy pink glow around the illuminator. Move slowly and keep your eyes peeled. As for the game cameras, they mostly only trigger out to 30' in the day and even less at night, so move slow and off of the beaten path and you should be ok.

Just build your own warspying device.

Me and my brother went up to the steps of the building and looked around, and about 15 minutes later, a white windowless van showed up and told us to leave. So they have the cameras, and there is a pretty long response time.

Maybe. could have just been someone who happened to pass by. do the same thing once every other day for a week or two and see if the same thing happens.

Warspying is fun, but it is unlikely to find these cameras.

Typically, warspying is looking for 2.4 GHz cams, like X-10 and similar. Those are probably not what would be used to monitor a vacant piece of property. Their range in too short.

If they have "wireless camera security", they have probably contracted with a company that uses something with a much longer range.

Now there is the problem, ICOM had a scanner the R-3 that was able to do so, but they stopped building this one for some reason.
There might be other scanners that are able to do so, but I am not up-to-date with this.

There might be a radio scanner that can be used with a PC that still has this option, but you would have to google it.
And for the price, something like this cost about $500, or you might be able to get a used R-3 for about $400

But maybe you want to try this, buy a wireless camera with external antenna and get a better antenna for this camera. Just let the camera sit in your trunk and let it transmit. This way you might be able to interfere with cameras that might be there. And as these things are license free, you can't get in trouble for doing so.

There are only three Frequencies they can transmit on.
900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz.
And it always depends how the system is build. So the best would be that you have a router in the middle and all signals for from there with a parabolic antenna to the HQ.

Well, that is three frequency ranges ("bands") and there are multiple frequencies within each band.

But, I didn't explain this well enough.

Most likely they are not using consumer "wireless cam". They are using a service which installs cameras, encodes the video signal and sends it wirelessly. I know of companies that send the signal via point-to-point microwave and ones that send it via the cellular phone network. The company I used to work for, installs cameras and sends the signal via satellite.

We don't know what they use and I saw companies that should have professional systems using cameras from walmart because the security guy didn't know better.

In any way, as I said there are so many ways to find cameras, it might take some time, but it's quite easy to find them, and quite easy to find a weak point in every system.

We don't know that they are using cameras at all; that was OP's question!

The "big green sign" says "wireless surveillance". He didn't say that the sign says anything about "video surveillance" or "camera surveillance".

The first step I would take is to read the sign and make note of the company's name. It would be easy to look at their website or even to call and ask "I own a piece of rural property I am concerned about, does your company offer wireless video?".

I hear what you are saying, that they might have used walmart cameras, but that isn't even really the issue. Heck, walmart cameras might work just fine in the application.

All any security system does is make it take time to gain entry. From the simplist lock to the most elaborate measures it is just a matter of having the time to defeat them. You could break into Fort Knox and cart away all the gold, if they would give you enough time without those pesky guards showing up!

Well I tried to scout out a little last night with a camera looking for the IR lights on the cameras, saw nothing. So today I went in anyways. I didn't get in very far, in fear of being escorted out of the area and not being able to get back. I got a few pictures of the inside and a couple on the outside. I'm no photographer but in my opinion they aren't horrible.
