| | Respirator question (Don't hate me!!!) < on 6/20/2012 1:01 AM >
| | | OK, maybe this is a silly question (probably/definitely?) but does a modern production gas mask with 40mm non-expired NATO type government approved filters provide the same level of protection as a generic P99 or P100 half-face respirator? More protection? I get that 99% of the time I'm not going to need a gas mask, but there's some places I've been wanting to visit where I DON'T want the sh*t in the air to get anywhere near my face. And correct me if I'm wrong, but neither gas masks or respirators would protect you from H2S/Carbon Monoxide, since those two things create an oxygen-free environment, right? Again, I apologize that this is a noob question, however I myself an sort of a noob I did try and use the search function, didn't see anything on this particular question. Thanks!
(and yes, I know that respirators are hotly debated objects on this forum, I am not trying to start any sort of flame war or troll AT ALL, please don't think thats what I'm aiming to do.)

| | | Problem solved. I'd say go with the P100 half face. I base this on nothing. Good luck!

Do you actually know how to size a modern gas mask and how to test it? As this being said, besides the self test you should do at least ones per month, they need to be tested at least ones the year if they still work the right way. It looks like you don't know this, because people that know this, also know what will be filtered by a NATO type filter.
Also, be warned, if your NATO type filter has dents, was dropped, or you can hear moving particles in it when shaking, it's not safe to use this filter, unless you want to have more filter material in your lungs. Modern type gas masks need more attention than commercial respirators you can buy at Home Depot. And to your answer, depending on the type of filter, they filter 99.99% all particles out of the air, and all kind of things you will NOT find in normal life, unless you go into a former Gas factory, but than you might need a Overgarment or Zodiak http://www.youtube...atch?v=naRoV1-jqhU So try it with a normal half mask respirator, unless you know what you are doing.

| | | Thanks for the information everybody, its been quite helpful. Sounds like a less complex respirator is the way to go. I don't mind doing regular maintenance (you get used to it after cleaning an SKS every single time you shoot corrosive surplus ammo out of it) but I wouldn't want to mess something up and be breathing in bits of filter, asbestos, dust, and decomposing animal (yummy!) Again, thanks!

| | | Not sure. For example I have a canadian C4 model gas mask (pictured here with no filter attached) with one NATO rated non-expired filter. I find it works great, but dont fully trust me on this question so keep looking for the answers.

Now when you shake the filter, do you hear any think moving in it? If so, your NON-EXPIRED filter is NOT usable anymore. This means you might breath in the filter material, or the filter might not work very well.
I throw out more non-expired filters in my time at the armed force than anything else.
Also when did you pressure test your mask the last time? When did you do a self test the last time?
Don't be dumb and use material you are not sure about. Unless you learned how to use a military gas mask the right way, you might not want to use it.

Yes i have pressure tested my mask, and I replace my filters frequently. Plus i do know how to use one the correct way. So im safe, but thanks for the reminder. [last edit 6/23/2012 8:30 PM by thetrainguru - edited 1 times]

| | | Yes, but they are $20000 per piece and someone took the filter element out. This model would not make it with working filter inlay.

Nooo, I want to rock a gas mask to avoid getting particles of decomposing decade old cow in my eyes and on my face Which now that I think about it is easily accomplished with a respirator and a mystical invention that goes by the name of 'goggles'

| | | As long as we're on the topic of respirators I have a rookie question that I'm hoping someone much better informed than myself can answer. How often should I be changing filters? I am currently using this mask: http://www.amazon....ds=p100+respirator Since I was unsure about the filters I've just been changing them every time I go somewhere. Is that an unnecessary expense? Also, I read those filters are fine for asbestos, but does anyone know if they protect you against black mold? Or how I might be able to find out if they do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am using the MSA one, maybe I will see where I can get the rabit version. To answer the filter question, here is the answer from 3M http://multimedia....6EVs66SjWZCOrrrrQ-
Now as we might not use them very often, you might want to pack the mask airtight and should have a longer interval and the 6 month as 3M says.
