| | | i have the basics. a headlamp, maglite, hepa respirator, backpack, camera w crap tripod & glock (optional lol). are there any serious suggestion of what tools and or supplies that a complete noob like myself should get? keep in mind i usually role (EDIT- roll) solo. what an idiot! 2 hrs sleep! my backpack can fit alot more in it also how are the "burglary tools" looked upon by you guys? i understand the extra charge but it seems like if there werent any of us actually breaking into these places there would be no way for all of my UER friends to get in. i mean one of us has to cut the fence/ pull down boards, cut padlocks etc or no one does anything and that would just suck [last edit 6/27/2012 10:53 PM by buddykermit - edited 1 times]

| | | If you are going to carry burglary tools be careful how you do it. I carry a few things sometimes but it changes how I go about the place and if I'm going to carry them out w me or ditch them. As for the glock, I'd be very careful carrying it while trespassing. Don't want any extra weapons charges on top of a trespassing if you happen to get caught.

| | | i ALWAYS bring a leatherman multitool. Then again, i never leave the house without it. The only "weapon" i bring is a folding knife. Usually, if a place requires B&E, i just don't go. Also, because i focus on drains, i bring about 3 flashlights with me, one of them being those ones you charge with the crank handle so i don't have to worry about batteries on the backup. Also, because of draining, i sometimes bring chalk to mark where i have been to keep from getting lost, but i will not bring spray paint for tagging. I would HIGHLY recommend gloves, keeps mess down, and keeps sharp things from doing harm.

| | | good stuff, yeah i forgot to mention that i do have and use batting gloves whenever i go out. id like to try the mechanix gloves but ill wait till these give way. a leatherman or decent swiss army knife would seem indispensible. the crank light is a good idea but i carry extra batteries for both my flashlights so im good there. and if i were to use any of these burglary tools it would be just for entry and to access places otherwise out of reach. im not there tagging or stealing or mindless destroying stuff, i just like to be there lol. i think i may put a decent entry set together here soon and share the details. and as far as the cops im pretty much not worried about them at all. when exploring the only things i fear are other people, building structural integrity, and heights. man i love the mind**** of being up high

Every building I've been in so far (and I've been in a State Hospital, mental institutions and CITY HALL!) has not required any breaking of anything, no tools other than a flashlight and a big brass pair. Cutting fences, ripping off boards, cutting locks and other vandalism is generally frowned upon. Also, don't worry about leaving an opening for "friends". If they're skilled UE, they'll find a way in. Leaving an entry point invites the scrappers and other bastards we don't want. Now, I'm not saying I won't ever use a set of picks. The State Hospital got locked up, and I'm pretty determined to get back in eventually. I'm probably going to have to pick it. But if I leave a means of entry, it'll be by subtle means where only people I trust will be able to use it, and those who try to secure it won't notice.

| | | Like others have said, a leatherman, gloves (especially coated types), multiple flashlights w/extra batteries, a folding knife (check the legal limit for length in your state), camera gear, a headlamp, a respirator, rope and even a sweatshirt w/a hood can all come in handy. I'd say gloves, flashlights and a knife are your must haves. I carry pepper spray and my folding knife, but that's as far as I go for weapons. As others have said you have to be careful, because it racks up the fine if you're caught and make charges more serious. As for b&e gear you really have to watch out. I had to use a drill to get through a door once, but before going in I stashed it in a nearby bush, just don't forget to pick it up before you leave.

| | | I might add a lockpick set. If you buy an el-cheapo masterlock (or whatever the one with the blue ring on the bottom is) you can learn the raking technique pretty well, and that takes care of most cheaper locks you'll find. And as has already been stated, good swiss army knife/multi tool, gloves (I have a pair of half gloves underneath thicker gloves, for roof climbing you get better control if your finger tips are exposed IMO) And since I'm in Canada I don't get the luxury of carrying a Glock, or any other restricted firearm (read: scary looking gun/pistol) anywhere other than a shooting range. Because that would obviously be dangerous. But hey, its fine if I carry an SKS or M14 into rural abandonments, because thats how Canadian gun laws work -_- You might also consider bringing a basic medical kit and a canteen, as well as an MRE. Not really necessary but hey, it can be nice if you find a great spot and wanna explore for like, an entire day.

| | | im a gun nut i know all about canadas laws. hey be glad your not in the UK where i was born... lol @ family guy "a man with a gun a 2 bullets has taken over the city of manchester" i do carry a few nutri grain type bars, some granola bars, and a huge sack of nuts ive yet to eat any of this as its kind of like emergency/survival worst case scenario type food. i also head out with a 32 ounce purple powerade. always purple because being in the hood 99% of the time i can use it for barter if need be, not to mention its also my favorite. im going to try to find out legally what my best weapon option because personally i wont do it without one esp since i go alone. you guys will eventually disarm me....... rope - 550 paracord will do nicely! edit- went off on a rant and forgot the main thing i was going to say. a good set of bump keys in the right hands will open many doors and for a person thats never picked a lock before with a rake & torque wrench its much easier [last edit 6/28/2012 12:59 AM by buddykermit - edited 1 times]

| | | I also forgot something... i ALWAYS bring a few water bottles with me. Oh, and you don't want to be walking on uneven floors with uncomfortable shoes. Get good boots. I don't trust sneakers that well. And when i wear boots, its usually steel toe. I mean, i have steel toe boots that are good, why not? Im sure that this is rule of thumb, but cell phone, if you need to call anyone for help or if someone needs you. Of course only if you have one. You don't need to get a two year cellular contract for UE really. That's my other two cents on the subject

| | | I own a ridiculous amount of UE gear. But I default to a flashlight, and a swiss army knife; nothing else. And even the swiss army knife is optional. Keep it simple.

| | | Always: A folding knife, a good light. If I'm planning anything, I bring a bag with a waterproof notepad, a simple FAK (with the boo-boo nonsense removed), an extra (good) light or two and maybe something to snack on. If I'm in a cave/drain: I'll add a bunch more (good) lights and whatever back-up batteries I have. (Depending, I'll add a crowbar and/or whatever manhole-popping things I'm using at the time.) If it's a photography trip: Add a tripod, whatever lights are still left, and whatever lens(s) seem appropriate. If it's underground: It all goes into a filthy, beat-up, tough-as-hell Maxpedition bag that I can count on. If it's an active location: I use a nicer (read as: clean) backpack, I'll dress a little nicer, and I'll stash a set of picks somewhere inside for rooftop shenanigans. Point is: Every trip is different and different types/times/places/occasions have different needs. No one list will accomodate every situation. Recently, my pack included spirit gum and black make-up in case my Nightwing mask came off over the course of the night. More Importantly: The thing everyone keeps forgetting is beer. Cans pack out easier than bottles, make less noise, and they're finally starting to put GOOD beer in cans. (Life is good.)
