| | Stormdrains < on 5/2/2012 4:01 AM >
| | | Are storm drains worth going down into? and what do they look like in the inside? I have researched it and i could find no pics of a storm drain. Thanks

| | | Most drains you'll see on these forums are storm drains. They vary on what they look like depending where they are, expected flow, ect. [last edit 5/2/2012 4:29 AM by Phelonius - edited 1 times]

| | | there are many here who love draining and with a little research and knowledge of how drains work you could be in for a real adventure filled with old rooms, stairs, slides, balconies, and so on. you could also be in for a short trip down a shrinking pipe anything is possible...be safe and have fun.

| | | Steed's right, but it's not the Turtles you gotta worry about...it's running into Shredder. Last time we ran across him, motherfucker robbed our beer! Nah, but seriously, read this: Predator's Approach to Draining And since Google image search actually does suck for 'storm drains', here's a picture of a drain (and some Roman candles): [last edit 5/2/2012 6:57 PM by imprezawrxsti - edited 1 times]

| | | My idea is personally not worth it, but it's something to do. Some are definitely better than others. I don't know how people on this site manage to find dry storm drains...I expect wetness and repetitiveness. The sounds from overhead cars will be amplified loudly. There will probably be no people to bump into. Watch the tide. Here is a very cool, large storm drain. Don't expect all of them to look like this, though.

This couldn't be further from the truth. There is an abundance of large, gorgeous brick, stone, and other such drains all over this country and others. This goes the same for sewers, CSO, and other tunnels. I prefer the company of drainers to any other type of explorer. Peeling paint is only interesting for so long. Many times you'll hear tunnels referred to as simply a drain or storm drain, when in fact they'll be a combined system, or a sewer. I've explored "drains" all over the Midwest US, UK, and Belgium. Don't shy away from what's underneath you feet

| | | No drains if it rains. 1) Check weather forecast online before leaving the house. Make other plans if there is a chance of rain. 2) Step outside your house and look at the sky. 3) Listen to NOAA weather radio on way to the drain. 4) Check sky again before going into drain. It is not too late to make other plans. This is serious business. Water rises rapidly in the drains. edit: fixd typo [last edit 5/3/2012 2:34 AM by Keaven - edited 1 times]

| | | Question, new to drains here, figured the land of Sasky toons might have some good ones, since prairie flooding is a problem. If your outfall is about a meter by a meter, is it going to get bigger, or smaller?

In general, the drains are biggest at the outfall and get smaller as you go upsteam.

Not trying to be cagey, but it could go either way and there really is only one way to find out for yourself. I've crawled up pipes that my shoulders only barely fit into which turned epic and I've walked into large outfalls that gradually shrunk down and down and down until I found an impassable end (or just got tired of crouching/crawling and gave up). Each one is different. While generally a drain can be assumed to shrink as you follow it upstream, it's not always true. And even where it was, subsequent additions/construction/blow-outs can be a total game-changer.

I don't doubt it, I fond an old map while digging around online (I was actually looking for the university steam tunnels) and I'm not entirely sure if it's still completely valid. But the layout makes sense, and it should be a huge system if it falls through.
