| | | I've ran into this twice now unlocked doors that are alarmed in abandoned buildings. I don't get why you'd go through the trouble of alarming them but not bother to lock your building up. Is it done on purpose as a "trap" ? or have I just been opining doors lately that were supposed to be locked?

| | | People forget to lock doors all the time. Perhaps having an alarm makes it easier to be complacent about securing things.

| | | Two of my alarms were in places where the doors were already broken open or the doors were outright missing, the only option they had aside from an assload of plywood was the alarm. The other alarm blew my mind because it was fucking ridiculous. I opened a garage door on a mill and set it off. Seriously? You didn't just lock it? I could go back and explore if the town ever has a blackout.

Alarms often have backup power. Not always, but..

Yes, plus the alarm was probably installed back when the building was occupied by an active business. Now that the building is vacant there are no longer tools, computers, petty cash and and most of the assets that were once there to protect. It isn't the big deal it once was secure the property, but the owners don't want scrappers to steal the copper pipes, wires and air conditioners, so they are still going to set the alarm (if it still works). Although we usually call these buildings "abandonments" here, very few are truly abandoned, most are merely vacant. That is one of the reasons we have a code of ethics which prohibits taking things from the properties we explore.

Either that or they really did just forget to lock the doors. But hey call me paranoid.

| | | I remember I was surprised when I found random open doors leading into WCO. Guess they didn't expect anyone to go looking to get in.

| | | Well, my buddies and I were checking out Pillsbury Mills a second time one night, and we didn't know where we were going at the time and ended up at the front doors. The one guy was kind of booking it and set off a motion detector alarm (which we were lucky wasn't silent) and booked out of there. The alarm makes it cheaper for the owners of the building where they don't need to hire security, and also makes it easier on the po-po where they don't have to do paper work and shit for arresting people who check out places. (At least in my own opinion)
Everyone, chill the fuck out! I got this. |

| | | The audible alarm also keeps people from sticking around to steal, vandalize, or burn it down. The one I set off at a mill literally instructed me to leave. Part of me was thinking oh shit and the other was loling. 'Warning, you've triggered an alarm! Evacuate!!' Thanks for the tip!

The dough boy doesn't make a good security guard. All you have to do is poke him in the stomach and he can't move much.

| | | Most of the alarms that I have found or tripped were not in place to secure the entire building, but rather to secure a specific section or room of the place, usually offices in an old factory or something like that. There were quite a few places I had gone where you could very easily walk around the rest of the building but you'd have to stay away from a certain door or section unless you were ready to run out. If you're unsure about an alarm and have had some time to figure out an escape route, just trip the thing, hide somewhere nearby and watch to see who comes and how long it takes them. Half the time nobody ever comes and the other half they do come but take quite a long time to arrive. If anything I do it just for fun sometimes. It can be entertaining watching them respond. I did this with a friend during a scout. We sat at the McDonald's across the street and ate lunch. Response time was 15 minutes, and three cop cars surrounded all the alleyways around the building.

| | | depends on the location and to some extent the country too over in the Uk most fire exit doors are alarmed and will go off if opened. Also came across wireless set up where they have been randomly placed but silent and go off with no sounder but you get a response. The daddy over in the Uk is the Red-care system plugged directly to the local police who respond instantly. I now this for a certainty as i set one off by accident then 2 times on purpose . 1st response 6 minutes for the police to roll up, 2nd time 4 mins last they came in silently no sirens or lights There are ways round some, others there are not unless. Monitored systems are a pain as you just don't know and keep a look out for IR cams at night as well. always have a plan
