So I got busted...
< on 4/23/2012 2:34 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

So I was sneaking into a location and apparently some guy at a nearby junkyard was watching. He started yelling about how next time he would contact the owner and all sorts of stuff like that. Thankfully he wasn't close enough to see are faces, so we're all good there. The question is: how long should I wait before heading back? Is there a grace period of some sort? I know heading back tomorrow would be pretty stupid, but perhaps a couple weeks from now? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can go back tomorrow if you want, there really is no 'grace' period. If he didnt see what you looked like then he cant prove it was you who he already saw. If you have to walk by an active junkyard, try going before it opens. If youre worried, try going before its light out. Say 4-5am?

you could go back tomorrow, but be aware that this junkyard "dog" is gonna be on alert now that he has seen one visitor to the property, and he may have contacted the owner.Personally I would scope out the place and wait a week or so

Alright, good idea, I'm going to try going while its still dark, hopefully it wont be open, or I'll find a different POE on the far side... Thanks for the advice!

And yeah it does, hey, nice to see another explorer around here!

Definitely search for a different way in. Aren't junkyards usually manned around the clock?

You could have gone back later in that day, honestly.

This may just be my odd viewpoint, but I think the sooner the least sketchy. No one really expects that kind of audacity...that you went around the corner then came back twenty minutes later and got in. Makes it safer in a sense.

I had a similar incident with a state hospital late last year. Security stopped my buddy and I, told us not to get too close to the buildings, and just followed us obsessively. Left, ate Mcdonalds, came back and explored the shit out of it.

They probably would have shit a brick if they knew we came right back and went in.

You weren't busted, you were yelled at.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

He was clearly bluffing...

If your worried, buy him a beer and talk to him for a while. Then he won't care either way. Or he will. I don't know.

And like the post above, you weren't busted, just yelled at.

I think I know the location you are talking about, I wouldn't worry.

I reccommend investing in a scanner app though.

Entry to the rooftop playground is free, if you look up enough to know it's there.

Thanks for all the advice people, I'm gonna head back this weekend and go back in. I hope he was bluffing, I doubt he knows who owns the place; on a completely unrelated note, does anyone know who bought up any of the great western sugar mills? Or are they still owned by GW? Anyways I'll update this thread when I get back inside.

Maybe wait a few days. Like others have said, the "watch dog" will be on the look out because he's a snoop. Definitely don't let him deter you, but I agree with a few others who have said go before the junkyard opens, as in a few hours before, not a half hour.

This. He doesn't own the place, why should he care what I do there?

Also on a related note, I'm thinking of climbing the 200 foot smokestack, i know its not safe, but can anyone who knows about climbing give me some advice? I was considering attaching carabiners every now and then to stop my fall if the rungs got pulled out. The ladder is arranged in 7 foot segments, so this way, even if one section came loose, I'd still have another one to fall down onto. Any advice would be much appreciated

If I was the Junkyard Guy, I woulda yelled at you too! I wouldn't have known that you werent a scrapper, a tagger, or even an arsonist. So, yeah talkin' to me woulda worked. Of coarse, I know what urban exploration is and this guy might not "get it" if you talked to him.

If you are gonna try this angle, you want to be able to sound legit. If the reason you want to see the property is its history, you should know something about its history. If you like its architecture, know something about its architecture. If you are a photographer, be able to talk about photography (and bring your camera).

A "not safe" 200 foot smokestack sounds like an excellent idea for an inexperienced climbers first attempt!

You could find someone experienced to teach you the basics of climbing. If you don't know anyone, take a rock climbing class.

Invest is proper gear.

Gain at least a little experience in safer, easier climbs. Preferably in a controlled environment.
