Permission

How common is it to contact the owners and ask permission on a property to photograph? Is it a good idea to expose yourself like that, or are you better off taking your chances with johnny law? And I'm talking more specifically about the larger-type facilities.

Already a few threads talking about it.

But if the places seems impossible to do illegally, then contacting the owner may be your only way. Ive gone to a bunch of places with permission that i wouldnt have seen if i didnt. If the place is alarmed, partially in use, or sealed to where i cant get in, thats when ill try and get permission.

Permission first. Trespassing second.

By asking permission you get to know the caretaker personally and can gain tons of access and information you wouldn't get normally. On the other hand caretakers are often connected to larger groups who won't bother dealing with liability issues.

I agree with Played on this one. I find that even when permission is granted... it normally has rules and you can't get 100% access, as in they won't allow you into areas they deem unsafe. Or they will actually walk you around the place and limit your time... more like a quick "oh, here's the hallway... now you should probably leave."

But in some situations, it really is the only way you are getting in to these places. If you can do it yourself, I would suggest starting there. If it's to sketchy, then ask for permission.

If I absolutely cannot get into a building any other way (i.e. it is locked up tight or heavily guarded), then yes, I'll ask permission. So far, I've only attempted this a handful of times and was cockblocked each time, sadly. Sometimes the "cute girl with a camera" ruse doesn't work in my favor.

I only like to ask for impossible places for the reasons listed above. Anyplace where it's permission or B&E means permission or fuck it as far as I'm concerned.

I've only been in one place with permission.

I have asked permission a few times and got some good history on a property. There is only been one occasion where the owner told me NO that he wanted things left as they were, and I respected that

Not really (not necessary but optional IMO) cause you wouldn't know who owned it. Who ever did own it probably wants nothing to do with the property. But if you feel more comfortable asking, go for it. But if that place is better guarded than fort Knox, you probably aren't going to get in there.

It can't hurt to ask permission, if it looks too challenging after scouting it out a few times then that is the way to go, the worst that can happen is they say no. Personally i have had some success with it, although when asking security i have only had that work out in my favor once. It is better to find the caretaker or construction workers in my experience as they generally just wave me on and tell me to not take or destroy anything

Never hurts to ask. If you tell the owner I'm a history major working on a project to document the histories of abandoned structures, in [insert city name]. I'm sure most would be more willing to grant you access. Going this route would also allow you to connect with the owner a bit and find out some of the history/story behind the building.

Some sites it's no issue anyway.
Permission means not looking over your shoulder and the freedom to shoot as you see fit. That owner or contractor may have other opportunities for you as well.
It's not what you know, it's who you know.

How you present you're self and to who is everything. Play with it and learn as you go.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

There is this one site I've been working on for 6 months. I've been warming up the 90 year old caretaker lady that keeps telling me to come back in two months and her company will be willing to give me access. Last time it was a no because scrappers had been arrested on the property a few days prior. I found out yesterday I got denied for another two cause I got stuck in a ditch leaving her property last time and the company was upset for whatever goddamn reason. FUCK her. I'm trespassing.
