Crushed dreams and crushed granite.

Had to go on a business trip to the midwest,It was stressfull and the days were long. I wanted to hit up Indy but it didn't work out. Luckily I know the perfect way to unwind and explored what I could find. I relished being able to explore somewhere besides the west coast for once.

The first place I found. The roads were a maze of multi-ton granite slabs and darkness. I felt like I was on another planet. It was eerie to say the least.

1.

There were some old out-buildings as well, nothing very exciting.

2.

I went across the road to follow another lead and found this...bingo.

3.

The outside light gave the place an overbearing orange glow. I did my best to work with it.

4.

There was a nice old firetruck inside. If this location were in California the firetruck would have been torn to pieces by now.

5.

6.

This old structure was harboring other secret residents as well.

7.

8.

9.

The immensity of the mill was only apparent at night thanks to my better than average flashlight and long exposures.

10.

11.

12.

I went back twice more, once during the day to get more detail and personality from the old mill.

13.

19.

Thanks for looking.

You're right about those vehicles; they would have been stripped bare had they been in CA. Great pics though. How much time did you get to spend there?

I love that old belt drive radial arm drill press in #8.

Great set. Night stuff, for the win.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

It was a very cool find I got word of from a local I was working with. I was able to spend about four hrs here between the three trips I made. Its actually being turned into a pavilion/park of some sort at the moment (better than a demo). You can see the landscaping in 3 and 13. The interior is mostly gone and part of it looks like it was set up as a dance area. This is more than likely a restore or re-purpose situation. I hear they've already had a beer fest here. Hell, maybe it'll be a brewery.

My contact here told me he could get me a private tour of an active granite mill next time I'm in town. You know I'll be getting pics of that.
