Crashed bomber/abandoned facility

Hey guys,

Tried to scan through the DB and see if anyone has posted but apparently not(although I'm not so naive to think that most of the users here haven't been here)...This is an old crashed Cansor bomber in the swamp on the way to Tofino.
Has anybody else been to the crashed Cansor on the way to Tofino?

On the way to the plane, you get to the top of the hill (before a tough slog in the mud) and there is, what seemingly 'feels' like an abandoned military installation.... I have never been able to find out what the building was and am looking for answers...

The story in short: The plane took off on a stormy night in 1945 with 12 people aboard. Shortly after take off, something went wrong causing the pilot to have to bail the plane into the hill side. All 12 survived. The 4 depth charges it was carrying, had to be destroyed, and there are at least 2 massive "ponds" (the thought of carrying 250 lbs bombs out of a swamp would be enough to blow them up there).

Awsome! I'v heard about this. I posted a link a while back that had a bunch of info on crashed plane's around british columbia, as well as pictures. Maybe it was listed on there. I'll try and dig it up.

That place is great eh but what a mud trek. It's surprising that other than local knowledge of the plane, the wreck goes almost unlisted in tofino. There are trail markers of signs that say "stay out" escentially. But they mark the way to the wreck . That pond in front of the wreck was where the military destroyed the depth charges. Always found that most interesting. It's in great shape though to spite everything that it's been through. Nice photos I take it you were there recently??

Oh yeah was there still that shitty red spray paint on the wings. Ruined all my photos of the plane!

Yeah, I have been there about a half dozen times...and made the mistake of going there last month in the pouring rain....worst mud I've seen of all the times - ruined a pair of jeans because the mud went beyond my knee high rain boots

I know what you mean, it's weird that it doesn't have more buzz to it...but if you are not personally shown the way into the trees, it would be very hard to describe to someone and that someone going there cold(without a guide) would probably be reluctant to keep heading forward

I guess a couple of years ago there was the actual news article from the local newspaper of the time pinned up in the plane but has obviously been taken/vandalized...

Though you've only got two photos of it, the building does have the basic signature of being an old communications site -- either high frequency radio, or perhaps a VHF/UHF site like a "GATR" -- Ground/Air Transmit/Receive operated by the military or federal government.

If you survey the area outside the building, look for the remains of one or more antenna towers -- could have been steel towers, or a series of telephone poles.

The interior looks like it had radio gear in the center, being powered by cables that ran in the below-ground troughs. Somewhere there would have been opening for the coax cables to exit the building & connect to antennas, and the facility would have had it's own power source, either inside a sectioned-off part of the main building, or a smaller, adjacent building.

If you want to email me the exact location, I'll try checking my database & look at the site on Google Earth to see if I find any other 'signatures' indicating it was a radio site.

There is a Canadian Coast Guard high frequency radio facility for Vessel Traffic Services a little farther south in Ucluelet, on Amphitrite Point, built in '78. Judging by the size of the room, and the fact that it is so close to the ocean, in an area with a good "ground plane", (good soil conductivity necessary for longer distance HF comms), I would be more inclined to think it was the original Tofino Coast Guard Radio Station, relocated in '80. VHF/UHF stations tend to be higher up (they are line of sight), as we see up Mt Ozzard, high above Ukee to the east. There is also a sizable CCG radar station up there. All part of Marine Communications and Traffic Services Tofino. There are 5 other MCTS centers on the entire west coast of BC, (three on Van Isle).

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

After talking with a couple "old timers" on ham HF locally here on the island, I have been told that the Canadian military also had a Receiving station in the area for many years. I'll do some research from this end, and most certainly do a visit to find out more.

Right on. I appreciate the insight guys. I was always curious of the inter-relatedness of the site and downed plane but I guess it was merely coincidence that the plane crashed in proximity to this installation (of course depending on time frames).

Steampunk: I presume you've been there before given your knowledge of the area?

I believe that was the communications building for the Radar Hill facility. Once part of the Pinetree Line.

Does seem like it was a GATR site for RCAF Tofino:
