Bump key functionality?

(attempted to) made my first bump key today. I couldn't find a triangle file, and had to make do otherwise. In videos, people have pointed out that it's important for it to be even so that the key doesn't catch going in or out. Wondering if this one is functional or if I should just track down a triangular file and try to make a neater one? Hoping to have someone who has used bump keys before to comment. I apologize if I'm posting incorrectly (though I don't think I am), I searched, but only saw UE encyclopedia entries and ethical discussions of lock picking. Anyhow, feedback appreciated, thanks. Photo of each side of the key attached.

My local keyshop sells them $2-$5. Much easier than making one.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

really? Most places here wouldn't even sell me a blank key for security reasons haha. No harm in asking though I guess; never though of being that direct. Thanks for the tip

Worst case you could always just buy one off the internet. Or buy a triangle file from Canadian Tire or something.

You can just by a "complete" set for relatively cheap online. They come to you machine made and ready to go. Save you a lot of time and effort.

As someone who is moderately-decent at picking locks, you're much better off raking the lock, some locks, especially old ones respond to this really well ;)
If you wanna use bump keys its a hassle carrying either a hammer of a sturdy object, Lock picking isn't as hard as it sounds, most locks you encounter in UE can probably be keyed (a la credit card in the slot and a little jiggling) or otherwise forced open, lock picking on older rusted locks is a pain in the arse unless you wanna carry a bottle of CLR around to wash it away....

Just my 2 cents

Skys the limit! :)

Agree. But if you give them a reason, it would result in an additional charge.

I chat with my neighborhood locksmith whenever I need am doing business with him. He has gotten to know that I have an interest in lockpicking etc..

I asked him "I've seen a lot on TV about bump keys and I see you you are now selling 'bump resistant' locks. But do any real burglars ever use picks or bump keys? Don't they just kick in a door or break a window?".

He had the actual statistics; the vast majority of burglars use 'forced entry', the #2 method was 'misuse of an issued key'. Picking, bumping, etc. was way less that 1%.

The door I'm wanting to use this on is on that I will want to be able to close behind me and leave as it was. Which is why bump key came to mind. I believe the door/lock looked newer-ish (newer then the rest of the building). From the comments, seems I'm probably best of buying online, thanks for the advice everyone

There is a section on bump keys on the user boards if that helps. Not sure where you looked. Also I have one of those files and I bought it for this purpose. Got it Home Depot in the tool section.

Closer than you think~ When you dig up the past, you tend to get dirty.

Bump keys can damage locks, and at the very least leave tell-tale signs any half decent locksmith can pick up on. Only foolproof way to bypass a lock w/o leaving "evidence" is with the actual key.

Also +1 on purchasing a pre made one, the homemade one will not work- angles/depths are waaaaay too off.

And yea, this is a far better topic for the private forums.

As long as the door is closable it would be fine, small damage that a locksmith would notice wouldn't matter for this. I'll either try getting a triangle file and try that on another key or just buy if that doesn't work out. Thanks

I can almost guarantee (to the point I would bet good money) you will not be able to cut a bump key by hand with a triangle file.

You need exact measurements, not "close".

The doors here, can be kicked in quite easily, so why using a lock picking tool, if they have no problem walking through the door.

In other countries, the doors are made stronger and they are achnored in the wall, but even than, most times a thief is using a sledge hammer or other tools for force entry.

And yes there are locks that can't be picked, drilled or otherwise be opened without spending a huge amount of time on it. I never saw one here in the USA, but a couple of them in Germany. They are quite expensive!

Also don't forget, in Texas for example, you are not allowed to own a lock picking kit.

I got a copy if a security key from the local hardware shop. The guy had a hard time finding the right blank and commented on it. I told him it was for my shop.
