Kernville Stamp Mill

First time I've gotten to walk around a fully constructed (albeit, restored) stamp mill. This one is only 3 stamps, but they're pretty big!

At a dilapidated and abandoned mill site about a dozen miles and a good hike from this museum, there are two 5-stamp mills sitting next to eachother inside a collapsed building. The stamp heads are a little smaller, but you can still see how they had all the drive gearing hooked up.

Nice photos Therrin! Some neat equipment there. I used to love going out to mines and what not. All the equipment and just the general feel is so comfortable. But that was before I photographed anything or even knew what my obsession was called. lol. Thanks for sharing!

My first Exploring was with my Grandpa in the kern river valley. Big Blue mine was one of our regular stops, as he and grandma lived just a few miles from it.

I think you and I have spoke of it before, in passing. Do you have any pictures by chance?

Here's a few pics of maps and such from the Big Blue mine.
I've been on the property, and dropped down some semi-collapsed inclines, but haven't been able to get "inside" the mine. Much of it is collapsed at this point. Apparently there's a large fenced off vertical that some locals told me about, I'll see if I can access it on my next trip up that way.

(sorry about the pic quality. My camera is failing, I had to walk around with it "on" just to make sure I could take pics while the lens was out. Also, several of the pages are covered in plastic, and made it difficult to take pics with the lighting they had. Deal with it. )

1. Longitudinal map of the Big Blue Mine.

2. Big Blue Mine buildings

3. Big Blue Mine stamp mill (something like EIGHTY stamps running in there!)

4. Tag, on the cube of "gold".

5. The cube of "gold" = 1 ton of gold. My size 15 shoe next to it, for comparison.

We never had cameras at Big Blue sadly. This was around '67 or '68 .we were always to excited to go exploring with gramps to remember a camera.

We were never allowed very close to the open shafts. But I do remember dropping a few rocks down them, I don't remember being able to hear them hit bottom.

The buildings were in sad shape, lots of paperwork around, equipment, tools, junk. I remember there was a pretty crappy old bridge we would walk across. I think Grandpas 55 Oldsmobile would have collapsed it?

I'd heard their were some deaths at Big Blue, Miners killed in a cave in I believe?

Thanks for the memories Therrin, thats the first time I've seen the Blue since the last time with my pop and grandpa in '68 or so.

I miss all three of them.

Wicked story and a nice find Therrin! Next time you find yourself up towards Downeyville be sure to check out the Kennedy Mine/Mill they have 10 intact stamps a few that move with a working pelton wheel, it's tour that's well worth it.

I've seen Pelton wheels at a few different sites, but it seems you'd need a rather large one to move a 10-stamp mill. Largest I've seen was maybe 3ft in diameter.

CR400: I'd extract all your memories from then if I could!

The brilliance of the Pelton wheel is the small ones had the power to move a giant mill, the Kennedy Mill has about a 3' one and by having the spring up the hill and simply through gravity and a high pressure nozzle it was able to power the mill. They are really amazing to see spin, the water flies off with an amazing amount of force!

Oh niffty! I haven't seen one in operation. The one at Panamint City is like 2ft or so, I think.
