| | | Has anybody run into this scenario. Place is totally falling down, looks like nobody's been there in 20 yrs., but one room has a light on, and of course i didn't notice till i went thru the doorway and an alarm went off!! i had just spent half an hour in the basement and hallway, into the kitchen, then the dining rm had the sensor in it. where on earth is the power or battery usually at? i didn't even think there was power at this place!

| | | The alarm was most likely all bark and no bite. There many different varieties of alarms. Some are loud but don't do anything other than act as a noisy deterrent. I'll take a noisy alarm over a silent one any day. In general if the alarm is real loud, it probably doesn't call back anywhere. Might be a good idea to get out while you can ... but once you're clear the perimeter observe if anyone comes and shuts it up. If you keep engaging it and then sneaking away ... they will assume it's faulty and disable it.

| | | - I've come across an old barn with an abandoned house, the barn had power while the house did not. - An old factory with power in the bathroom. - A rural home with a single working kitchen light. So as strange as your experience was, it is not totally unheard of. As to the source of the power, that's difficult to say as the first rule of alarm installation is to hide the CPU as best you can. They will have battery backup as well but that wouldn't last long without recharging. It's not so much worry about the alarm as it is the monitoring station that receives the alarm.

Many of these alarms are cheapy standalone things that just make noise. I have seen big inroads made to battery-powered CDMA-card-to-call-911 automatic systems that sit idly then alert someone and/or stream video...but those are still hundreds of dollars per unit. It's informative to read up on security products to see what is out there. That series of beeps and then alarm is likely to be a fake. Real alarm systems have a visible keypad so that you hear the beeping, remember that the alarm is armed, and type in the security code so that it doesn't alarm. If the keypad is hidden, it is fake. Most likely you can't disable it without knowing more. What do the sensors look like? PIR, wired? Anyway, be careful in houses - in my former state, unauthorized presence in a dwelling was automatically criminal trespass, regardless of circumstances.

You said it didn't look like it had been messed with in over 20yrs. What about the room with the light? Did it look any different from the rest of the house? [last edit 1/19/2012 5:20 AM by Astro - edited 1 times]

| | | both places look deserted. i was in the basement of both and didn't see anything that would seem like there is power or an alarm. the one place had a light on in the kitchen, but the basement was wide open and so was door into house, there was so much dust on kitchen table, there couldn't be anyone there, (so i thought) so i picked up phone on wall, it was still connected. that's when it beeped, but i left and no alarm went off. but in the second house after it beeped, i stayed to see, and the alarm went off! i tried reading to see what type of alarms are out there, but nothing seems to be like this. like i say just trying to see how to disarm, maybe shutting off breakers won't do anything?

Uh, yeah, that's a terrible idea. Disarming the alarm will get you into deeper shit than you would be otherwise in the event that you get caught. If an alarm goes off, be prepared to leave. Period. Don't even think about trying to disable it; chances are that if it went off in the first place, it's been noticed regardless of how long it was on.
