Respirators - do you use them?
< on 1/8/2012 1:48 AM >

I am curious as to how many people actually use respirators when exploring. I see photos of people wearing them but do not read much discussion of them. I'm a NOOB and trying to get myself kitted out and am considering buying one. What do you all think?
Thanks,
Mike

No. Unless you're planning on doing an abandoned mine or something... I don't think they're worth the money.

I just use a simple surgical mask I got from my doctors for severe cases of mould - He said it would work just fine.

Rarely. I am somewhat vulnerable to mold, so if I know a place has mad mold, know I'll have the bag space to carry the respirator, and know nobody will see me and call the police on the terrorist, then I might bring one.

no. There was only one place I ever wanted one too.

I use one whenever there's a risk of serious mold, asbestos or anything else that's not nice to breathe.

I only wore one at a coke plant for my first explore...then I realized how over-the-top it was and switched to a dust mask, but only for places that have lots of particles being kicked up, like a fertilizer plant I went to.

I went to a grain silo in Chicago and didn't wear a mask and ended up with some sort of respiratory ailment that made my chest and shoulders hurt when I took a deep breath. The doctors never really found out what it was but it was over within 2 weeks. I wear a dusk mask there now, but never really anywhere else.

I wear one because I would rather be safe than sorry. I am probably the only explorer I hang with that wears one regularly.

I just recently bought one and have used it already. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes especially if you're in a place that has bigtime mold, just flat out reeks or even asbestos, which a reg dust mask won't help with. It's better to be safe than sorry sometimes. And you don't have to go in there wearing it. Just carry it in a backpack or something. That's my opinion because that's what I do now.

I started out not wearing one when we would hit one place every few months. Didn't really think/ know about it back then, but now I almost always wear one, or at least have it in my bag should I need it. If a place is very well ventilated or we are only in for a short time, I won't bother, but if a place even has just a ton of dust or that funky smell to it, I'll throw it on....

It's a pain in the butt sometimes because no one can understand you unless you are right next to them, haha. But like a previous poster said, I'm the only one out of 95% of the people I've met that actually wears one.

My idea is better safe than sorry, and I definitely might overkill it sometimes, but I'd rather not end up with asbestosis or something down the road. To be honest, I don't think we have that high of a risk unless you frequent the tunnels and constantly bash your head against the piping that stirs up the particles. Most of the cases have been with people who spend their lives working with the stuff, so most likely you will be fine... but like I said, better safe than sorry.

Mold doesn't give me much trouble unless I'm already sick...I've extended a few colds to several more days due to poor planning. One place in particular didn't have mold until the bottom floor and by that point I was so distracted by the awesome that I forgot until I felt one rug squish beneath my feet.

I try to as much as I can stand it. The damned thing gets in the way when I try to look through the viewfinder--so admittedly sometimes I get pissed and don't bother.

Asylums, yes--always--although my first several months of exploring I didn't have one. The elastic bands are going out on mine so it can be hard to even keep it on.

The thought of lung cancer inspired me to both get a respirator and also quit smoking. I actually use an electronic cigarette now thanks to urbex...nicotine isn't really something I'm ready to bail on. Neither is urbex. So I've compromised with both.

I quit smoking a few years ago too, and that is part of why I am considering the respirator.
