Been here a few times, a pretty scary explore. Seven stories and no windows. The place is absolutely trashed, but it's still pretty cool I guess.

These pictures suck, but it was about 105 degrees that night, and there are no windows, so it was even hotter inside. We got in and out pretty quick, not to mention we climbed 14 flights of stairs.

As it was in 1960

Cat hasn't moved in years.

Here's the history of this unique building in Tulsa.

The Abundant Life Building was built in 1957 to house the Oral Roberts Ministries. It is very striking in its appearance because it has no windows. To make sense of the building requires at least a brief understanding of Oral Roberts.

Oral Roberts is an pentecostal minister and faith healer. He started his ministry as a pastor in the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He came to believe he had a special gift for spiritual healing. In April 1947, he began holding healing services in his church on Sunday afternoons. His reputation as a faith healer spread quickly and by May, the crowds were so large that he had to rent larger facilities. In June, he announced to his congregation that he had received invitations to conduct healing services in eight states and had decided to resign his pastorate. In 1949, he began a series of radio programs. By 1950, he was traveling the country with an 18,000-seat tent simultaneous broadcast on 63 stations. Within two years, his radio and television programs were being broadcast on 400 stations in the United States, Canada, Alaska and by short-wave to listeners around the world.

At the time the Abundant Life building was built Oral Roberts was raising literally millions of dollars through his traveling tent meetings and from radio and television solicitations. The name "Abundant Life" is a reference to the passage from the Gospel of John 10:10, "... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly". This and other scriptural references are the basis of what is called "the gospel of prosperity" His life and ministry have been the subject of considerable controversy. He is regarded by some as a prophet and by others a fraud. Nevertheless, he and his ministry have prospered.

The Abundant Life building was the headquarters of this ministry and contained a large television sound stage which could simulate the tent meeting and film the opening and closing segments of the weekly broadcasts. This was also the destination for the large donations which supported the ministry. Much of this money was sent in the form of cash donations and the security considerations of handling and accounting for this money were implemented within this building.

The scale of donations provided for the establishment of a a Christian university which Roberts named for himself. In 1964 Oral Roberts University was opened on South Lewis. By the mid-70s the activities of the Abundant Life Building were transferred to the university and the original building was closed.

Southwestern Bell telephone used it for a time then but since the early 1980s it has been empty. It has changed hands several times but attempts to convert it into a multi-use facility have not gone anywhere. It remains empty at this time.

I don't know a whole lot about him, but Fiend probably will.

edit - And yes I've seen oddities.. It's a cool show. I will never move that cat though.

I went there almost exactly a year ago before this time, and I compared the pics of the cat, and it nor anything around it has been moved. Even the insulation is the same. It's a difficult entry, I don't imagine a cat could get out. Then again he got in somehow... who knows how long ago.

edit again - I just went back and looked at that pic of the cat, and it looks like someone might have kicked it a few inches in the last couple of years. You can see the outline of it sort of swiveled from the head.

In 1977, Roberts claimed to have had a vision from a 900-foot-tall Jesus who told him to build City of Faith Medical and Research Center, and the hospital would be a success.[25][26][27] In 1980, Roberts said he had a vision which encouraged him to continue the construction of his City of Faith Medical and Research Center in Oklahoma, which opened in 1981.

Oral's University is still in operation on the south side of town. Odd you should mention space men.....Oral had the Jetson's house on campus!!!! Behold the campus prayer tower.

This is the building where Oral locked himself up and claimed that if he did not get millions of dollars by next week God was going to call him home.

I actually remember when he did that. I don't know if he got the money.

Given the amount of opulent buildings around here bearing his name, I would have to say yes.

I had no idea so many people knew about him. I moved here from Dallas 1 year ago, and that was the first time I ever heard of Oral Roberts. I can tell you that the university looks like a bunch of space ships, and the main tower is as tall as most skyscrapers downtown, and has gold bars on all the windows. Fiend tells me when this was a hospital people would jump out so they barred it off. It looks very strange. Not to mention the worlds largest set of praying hands. I'm getting the feeling this guy was slightly fucked up.

I was thinking that Oral Roberts was Robert Tilton who was out of Dallas. He got busted when a local pastor and PrimeTime Live teamed up and found that the prayer request where just thrown in the trash after they took out the money. Some of you younger folks may know him as the Farting Pastor.

Our very own Billy was in the Tulsa Weekly this week for an interview about urban exploring. They spoke of the Abundant Life building and I found this piece of info quite interesting.

Currently, Freese Architecture is renovating Abundant Life, now called the Diamond Building, from a six story windowless building into a 12 story mixed use facility with condominiums, ground floor retail, and office space, according to the firm's website.

I was there this weekend and saw no evidence of this, but who knows. Would be nice to see the place get fixed up and used for something.

Yeah, some Rancher paid him the money and told him to "Shut the F*** Up and quit ripping off the Senior Citizens". Oral was not heard from after that to my knowledge. He was in so much Debt at that time, he was trying to save his Campus, and trying to bleed the faithful for it.

I am not anti-Christian, nor am I anti-religion, I am just anti-scam-artist.
