How did you get into urbex/1st experience?

For me, it started with an article. This article was about catacombs, and dealt a bit of attention to cataphiles. In the article, it said that the explorers left a note for the police saying, "We are leaving, don't look for us." This sort of mysterious comment made me wonder...who are these cataphile people? Subsequently, I did some of my own research on these enigmatic folk, all of which led me to urban exploration. After doing some research on the philosophy of exploration, reading a plethora of stories and browsing through innumerous photos, I decided one sunny late summer day last year that I'd had enough; it was time for me to do some exploring!
I hit up the church across from my house (there were not as many visitors at the time as there are now, and it wasn't Sunday) and there was no receptionist at the front desk, so I just walked right in, trying to avoid the booming voice of the minister coming from upstairs. I was nearly soiling my pants with fright as I walked through the basement level, ready to duck into the nearest piece of cover should anyone see me. Trembling, I made my way over to a room that made me fall in love. It was an old staircase, and materials were tossed around haphazardly. While the rest of the church was gleaming and new, this room behind the stage, in contrast, was probably not used for years. Stairs creaking, I made my way up (with difficulty because I had to bypass some obstructions). I paused for a moment to let the view soak in. Then I jumped down the stairs (to avoid the obstruction) and my impact reverberated around the whole basement. Frightened, I hurriedly (but silently) made my way to the exit, where I could still hear the churchman talking in his monotone drone. I exited the church without being seen. First site was an active site, and mission success!

Please feel free to share your experiences/stories.

Honestly, I don't even remember when it all started. I grew up in a small town in the country. We'd be out on our ATVs as kids and find old abandoned houses or buildings and check them out. The trail behind our house had old cars and washing machines and junk like that, I always found it fascinating. If I had to name one, my first real explore was probably the co-op seed place in town. It'd been closed for many years so some friends and I went around and checked it out. It was a pretty big warehouse-style building. The best part was the tall tower that you could climb. When you were up there, you could see quite far. I've always been fascinated by old abandoned buildings and the like, probably because I grew up around that kind of stuff.

It was in my blood.

As soon as I could get away from home I would explore.

When I think back to some of things I did I can't believe I never got abducted.

I just answered the ad in the paper. Urban exploration seemed to pay okay, and the hours were flexible.

I always have been interested in what happened at the Chernobyl incident. I was looking at photos one day online and followed a few link and found myself in urban exploration territory. My first thought was "holy shit, people do this for fun!" I've been hooked ever since.

I had a hard time finding places to explore for the longest time, but about three weeks ago I found and got into my first abandonment. It was an auto body repair shop. Since then, I've been finding places like crazy and getting into the majority of them.

A friend of mine had been to a few places and posted pictures on Facebook. Ever since then I'd wanted to give Urbex a try. So a little less than two years ago I took a road trip to go visit him, and we then proceeded to an abandoned nursing home that was an easy explore. It was quite creepy, especially on the cold dark and windy day it was. We heard a voice which we believe to have been paranormal because nobody else was there.

i have since gotten over my phobia of abandoned buildings. My only worry is getting caught by the cops because one occasion I was seen entering an abandoned area and the cop stopped and questioned me. It'll just take a little time, but I'll get back in full swing at some point.

I was introduced in a bizarre way. In my first year in Korea, I was chatting with a friend back home who explained to me what UE is. He then got me involved in this bizarre drama where some detective was trying to uncover local explorers. He was "under cover" on MSN, though it was a pretty weak pretense. I was safe being in another hemisphere, so I suggested he introduce me to him and I'd feed him a line and see what we got out of him. So before I even knew what UE was, I was spouting bullshit about being the uber king of it.

Then a year later I discovered there might be abandoned buildings in Korea, as well as drains, rooftops, cranes, amusement parks, bible camps, etc, and that there was nobody documenting any of this. Fast-forward a few years and here we are.

I always thought abandoned buildings were beautiful and was fascinated by them. I never got up the courage to actually go inside one till about two years ago, and haven't been able to stop since. it's addicting. The rush of entering a place that has been forgotten or is forbidden, and finding the beauty in something that most people consider an eyesore. It's an easy and fun pasttime.

Well, when I was little my dad always used to take me to old forts. It fascinated me to explore all the tunnels, old bunkers, underground rooms and such.
But nothing more really occurred to me. I was a product of society, I knew that a "no trespassing" or "authorized personnel" sign meant that whatever interesting lay beyond it, poking my head in would surely immediately result in some terrible consequence. So I lived a normal life for a while until my sophomore year of high school. I still went to the forts, of course, I still loved to explore them.
Then I was given an unusual gift, an antique movie camera. I fixed it up and restored it, and started researching where I could get some film for it. I came across a thread on APUG, in which someone had posted a link to a flickr set of an abandoned Kodak factory. I remember reading that they had evaded security to get in, and the pieces started to fall into place. I remember thinking, "Oh, there are places out there like this?!" In researching "exploring abandoned buildings", I came across infiltration.org. I ended up reading the entire site, and I started to look at the world a bit differently, with all it's hidden places, forgotten buildings, secret tunnels, rooftops and such.
I haven't looked back since. My first real infiltration was the tunnels under my school. I was nervous and apprehensive, as I struggled to cut through the darkness with my mini-maglite, and I didn't end up getting through hardly 100 feet of tunnel. But I was hooked.

Sheer boredom in an urban environment as a teenager got me into it I suppose. There were never many abandoned places in my city, as every last bit of open land was being sucked up by housing development, so me and my buddies just liked to explore places we weren't supposed to go. We'd find ways into schools and churches after hours and just cruise around. I did that for a few years and only recently found a name for what I did, on this site!

I got into urbex with a natural sense to want to explore. I've seen shows and documentaries, like Urban Exploration: Into the Darkness, which kept pushing the sense to explore (and that is also how I found UER).

Unfortunately I haven't had a first experience yet. One of two explorable places in town was demolished. However there's a ghost town a few hours away I'll be looking at later.

I just wanted to get away from people and abandoned places seemed like a good bet since they were, well, abandoned. I hate society, I never fit in really. So I wanted to go places where I was less likely too see other people. And just sit and wonder what was happening there 20 years ago.

I dig it.

The quietude draws me too. Probably the only place and time in the world I can find beautiful, delicious, complete SILENCE.

I explored an abandoned house with my grandma when I was 8. After that I started actively looking for locations.

I read about UE for the first time in early 2000s when I was 16 or so.

i was a 'latchkey' kid growing up. usually out and about since i was about 8. most of where i grew up had some old abandoned houses, and business's. so id spend some time checking out anything that had a easy access.

that grow to an actual interest in finding out the history of some of these buildings. and that just carried on throughout my adult hood. im still not into the picture's as much as most. but try to dabble. but mostly i just dig the history of buildings

My younger brother told me about this site back in 2000 when I was the same age. I have always had an inquisitive mind.
