The Shrine

This home was on an old farmstead of 180 acres in very rural Oklahoma. The last owner of the home was "John", who passed away about 6 years ago.
An only son, "John's" father died in 1977 and his mother remained on the property until her death in 1988. "John" returned intermittently in the
following years, but the property was unoccupied for long stretches. "John" grew ill in 2004, and died shortly after. Already falling into disrepair,
the house eventually fell prey to vandals. It was said that "John" kept the home pretty much as his mother had left it, sort of a shrine, refusing all
offers to sell the property.

Located on a gravel road in a wooded area, the home is no longer visible from the road.

According to local rumor, they were unable to find his mothers car keys after she passed away, and the car just sat.

The house.

There were several outbuilding and remains of such in the woods behind the house, and another surprise.

My guess is this was "John's" father's truck. Parked here after his death. It was last tagged in 1977.

The keys were still in the ignition. 22,734 miles on the odometer.

There were other building I've yet to explore on the property. I don't know who now owns the property, though the farmland is in use. "John" never
married, so there were no children to carry on.

It's always strange to see a place far more run down than you'd expect from someone living there. A lot of the overgrowth especially looks much older than 6 years, so it's difficult to imagine that "John" lived in a place like that. Really makes you wonder. Great find.

What amazes me as I look at this thread is how surreal it is. Just to stop and think about it all, about how important all this was to a family, then a mom and her son, then just a son. They preserved it, for whatever reason, just like "dad" left it, or just like "mom" left it. But now, it's up to nature and vandals to keep is just like "John" left it. But nature and vandals do not care about John, or his family, or his things. And slowly, it all goes away.

Like Mim-14 said, I don't know how you do it. You have a talent for drawing readers into your stories and somehow making these places come to life.

From what I understand, after about 1990, he just returned for short "visits", a week or two and then left it for months at a time. It was his choice, but it's a shame he just let if fall to ruin rather than selling it.

So true. I am always sucked into the story of these places and how you find them is a mystery to me.

When I see "dwtaylor999" has posted a new thread and I am browsing on my phone I atop and think "This has to be viewed on a computer or no justice will be had" so I always wait for them until I get to one.

This is such a gorgeous place and it is so touching and strange. With all this stuff remaining here and the condition of those vehicles, its hard to believe it will just remain as is.

Interesting stuff man. Thanks for posting; I enjoyed it.

I think it's great that you were able to provide a lot of background information about the history of this location. It really tells a great story about the property and the people who once lived there. Thanks a lot for sharing the photos.

i would love to be able to document the decay of a house from the time of abandonment through year six or more via timelapsed snapshots. hmm, future project for me... it would be cool to see the place slowly coming apart.
